Weird Racks: Peruke Deer Antlers

2020-06-10T09:22:49-04:00June 26th, 2014|BigDeer|1 Comment

Mike: I know how you like wild racks, check out this one! Have you ever seen anything like that before? Tom from Iowa I did a little research. A QDMA post says this crazy skull was picked up in Maryland some years ago. The taxidermist that now has it said a couple of hunters had seen the buck alive, but it was “acting stupid.” A year later the buck was found dead. Examination found that the right antler had sprouted up in a perfect cauliflower, but the left antler had grown inward, back into the skull and down into the brain pan and eye socket. Zoologist and antler expert Dr. George Bubenik said this type of unusual growth is known as a “peruke,” [...]

Estimate Your Deer’s Weight

2020-06-10T09:22:49-04:00June 25th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management|8 Comments

The old-time deer hunters didn’t care what a buck scored, all they wanted to know was, “What did that sucker weigh?” A lot of hunters still want to know just that, especially up in Maine where a 200 is a much sought after 200-hundred pounda. Here’s simple math for estimating a deer’s live weight. Pull the guts out of your animal, hang it and weigh it on a scale, pull up the calculator on your Smartphone and multiply the deer’s field-dressed weight by 1.28. That will give you a good ball-park. For example, a 150-pound gutted buck would have weighed about 192 on the hoof, give or take 5 pounds.  A 120-pound doe would have gone about 154. What is the heaviest buck [...]

Hunt Skills: Best Way to Your Tree Stand

2020-06-10T09:22:49-04:00June 24th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management|2 Comments

Mike: Every time I walk into my favorite stand I jump four or five deer that blow up and crash away. I have the wind right, and I am quiet. What am I doing wrong? Travis from NY Travis: Oftentimes the shortest and easiest route to a stand or blind is not the best way. In your case since you repeatedly jump deer, it sounds like you are walking through (or very close to) a thicket, ridge or similar spot where deer like to hang out and browse, or bed down. Whitetails are habitual animals that eat, walk and hang in the same general areas so long as they feel safe and comfortable there. You need to avoid them and find a new way to [...]

Drones for Hunting?

2020-06-10T09:22:49-04:00June 23rd, 2014|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Hunting News|5 Comments

I just heard an amazing and almost unbelievable stat: in 20 years every person in the world will have a “pet drone” or at least access to a drone, just like everybody now has a cell phone. What will the billions of drones in the sky mean for our hunting? Is there any place for a drone in the deer woods? As the technology advances and drones become cheaper and easier to use and fly, it is inevitable that people will find a way to use them for all activities, including hunting. People already have. State troopers and wildlife cops in Alaska are aware of at least one drone-assisted moose kill, back in 2012. Other than shooting cool footage for [...]

Big Deer Archives: Biggest Drop-Tine Piebald Ever?

2020-06-10T09:22:49-04:00June 20th, 2014|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|2 Comments

It seems I have seen an inordinate number of piebald fawns born this summer. It got me to thinking about all the white bucks I’ve written about over the years…none more impressive than the drop-tine that Ohio farmer Randy Schroeder shot in Ohio in 2007. I first reported on this deer in Outdoor Life back then, but the story and sight of it never get old. Just look at that beautiful hide and chocolate rack, awesome man: Mike: On November 24, my hunting buddy Todd and I headed down to my cabin in Meigs County in Southeastern Ohio. Deer gun season is always a special time for me. The crops are off, the machinery is put away and it is time to play. [...]
