North Dakota “Drop-Club” Buck

Shelby from North Dakota read one of my articles on drop-tine bucks, in which I wrote: …it must shoot down from a main beam at least 6 inches—7 to 10 inches is better, for then it becomes what I have deemed the highly regarded “drop club,” a term which is finding its way more and more into the deer-hunting vernacular. Also, the thicker and more massive the tine or club the better. The crowning glory is a couple inches of black, hardened velvet on the bottom of the club. You see that on many of the big drop tines and on all the most impressive ones. The bucks can’t or don’t rub the velvet off the bottom tips. It gives [...]

Missouri Hunter Shoots 22-Point Doe!

This excerpt from a story in the Springfield News-Leader I found astonishing: Twenty minutes before sunset, (Curtis Russell) spotted the deer among a group of does and one small buck. The bigger whitetail used its antlers to keep the smaller male at a distance. "I did a 50-yard belly crawl to cut the distance and got to within 175 yards," Russell said. "I was using a Remington 700 .30-06, and when I took the shot it was a clean hit." Now for the biggest surprise in Russell's 26 years of deer hunting: The buck wasn't a buck at all. It was a freak of nature, a doe sporting a huge set of antlers. Read the rest of the story here. (Photos: [...]

Texas 548-Inch Buck

2020-06-10T09:17:01-04:00December 14th, 2015|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|28 Comments

From the Recordbuck Ranch Facebook page: Jerry has finally received the official score for his monster buck. It was officially scored at 548" and takes the record for the largest buck in Texas!!! Way to go Jerry, congratulations. Well deserved for a wonderful man we are glad to call our friend. #monsterbuck #whitetail #500 #texaswhitetail #recordbuckranch This is obviously a high-fence buck, and it has generated a lot of conversation, with passion on both sides: A man has the right to hunt in a high fence if he so chooses…or, high-fence hunts are not fair chase and do the image of deer hunters no good. What do you say?

Pennsylvania Nun Shoots 10-Point Buck

2020-06-10T09:17:01-04:00December 10th, 2015|BigDeer|4 Comments

From Fox6now.com: A photo on the Erie Catholic Diocese’s Facebook page is attracting a lot of attention. It’s been viewed more than a million times. Sister John Paul Bauer, a teacher at Elk County Catholic High School in St. Mary’s, PA shot the 10-point buck. Sister John Paul says she’s amazed at the attention she’s gotten. “In St. Marys, this is what you do. You go hunting. Everybody goes hunting — the coach, myself, the students,” Bauer said. As the story goes, Sister John Paul prayed the Rosary as she waited in her tree stand. About 3 hours later, some does appeared, followed by 2 bucks. Sister John Paul shot the larger one, a 10-pointer. Blue collar, white collar, men, women, [...]
