How Rare Are White Deer?

2020-06-10T09:19:51-04:00February 9th, 2015|BigDeer, Deer Science|6 Comments

Last deer season 2 hunters shot 2 rare and incredibly beautiful white whitetails. One day in October 2014 11-year-old Gavin Dingman shot a 12-point buck with a crossbow. Another day fellow Virginia hunter Daniel Blaha shot this 8-pointer, which is without question the most stunning piebald buck I have ever seen. Just how rare are white deer like this? According to Wisconsin naturalist John Bates, co-author of "White Deer: Ghosts of the Forest," a true albino occurs in about one in 20,000 fawn births. Other biologists say they are much rarer, with only one in 100,000 deer born totally white. As for the genetic variation that causes the brown-and-white piebald, biologists say that less than 1% of all whitetails born will [...]

Coyote Hunting: Best Guns, Calls, Tips

2020-06-10T09:19:51-04:00February 6th, 2015|BigDeer, Predator Hunting|3 Comments

Now is a great time to try and bust a few coyotes on your land before the fawns start dropping in spring. Here's a quick primer: Find a Killer Setup: Look for a ridge top or hillside that overlooks a field, clear-cut, river bottom or other semi-open area. Try to set up and call where you can see well below, out to 100 or 200 yards or more. The farther you can see a coyote coming in, the more time you have to get your rifle up and prepare for the shot. Coyote Sign: Coyote tracks are 2 to 3 inches long, with 4 toes and round pads. An adult critter’s scat is 2 to 5 inches long, round and fat. [...]

SD Shed Hunt: What Killed This Buck?

2020-06-10T09:19:52-04:00February 4th, 2015|BigDeer, Predator Hunting, Shed Hunting|4 Comments

Got this from our friend and hard-core shed hunter Kelly K. out in South Dakota:  Mike: While shed hunting the other day, I picked up this nice 4-point, shot a couple pictures, looked over the fence and saw this! My question is, what kind of animal could kill a buck (scored low 170s) in great shape? I watched this deer 2 weeks ago and he looked just fine to me. He was in a herd of about 192 deer, and surely there were some younger deer that would have been much easier to kill. Notice the deer’s rib bones, which are chewed up to about 4” long in some places. I’ve seen a ton of deer killed by coyotes out [...]

Minnesota: Can this Injured Double-Drop Buck Survive?

2020-06-10T09:19:52-04:00February 3rd, 2015|BigDeer|7 Comments

On December 2, 2014 I got this email from Minnesota hunter Travis: Opener of MN shotgun was Nov 8th, and the season came and went. I heard a story from the neighboring property that one of them had hit but could not find a "a 12-pointer.” A few weeks went by, I checked one of my cams and about fell out of my chair! This double-drop buck limped by my cam closest to the house on November 19. Look close and you can see the buck’s right front leg is shot off just below the knee. Over the next couple of weeks Travis kept getting pictures of the buck on his food plots and known major trails… My dilemma is: Do I [...]
