From this new book from the Boone and Crockett Club, interesting weather data as reported by thousands of hunters that shot monster bucks for the record book. --93 percent of those giants were shot on dry days; half the days were sunny, and half were overcast --the wind was calm, 5 mph or less, on 85 percent of the days when the big bucks were killed --8 out of 10 of the monsters were shot when the temperature was 50 degrees F or less My take on the numbers: Regarding the 93 percent that were killed on dry days, I bet if we look deeper inside that data, we' find a pattern that consisted of dry, high-pressure days after a cool-to-cold weather front, something I’ve blogged about [...]

Trail Camera: 6 Weeks Antler Growth

2020-06-10T09:22:47-04:00August 12th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Management|1 Comment

One of our bloggers sent us the first good buck of 2014, which we posted back on June 27 and post again (top). Here’s a look at him now in the images below. With that first post I said the buck’s antlers, including those brows, would continue to grow into mid-August. Several people commented that brow tines seem to develop early in the antler cycle, and might not grow more as I had suggested. As you can see, we were both right. Brows do develop early, especially as compared to tines, but the brows have continued to grow, and the tine length has exploded. Another great 2014 buck, good luck to the hunter.

Summer Scout: Find Big Bucks Now

Guest blog from Montana bowhunter Luke Strommen, a charter member of the Big Deer Hunt Team: Here is story and a lesson I have learned. One time I spotted a gnarly 6x6 buck during my scouting and glassing routines in the summer.  The mature whitetail used his primary core area throughout July and August. I saw him many times and took some distant digital images of him from one of our tree stands. He would browse in an irrigated alfalfa field, and having completed his evening ritual, he’d sneak off to spend the night in a 20-acre corn field nearby. He continued this pattern into the early archery season in September, consistently passing by one of my stands, but late. [...]

Official: 2014 Big Rack Year!

The hunter who sent the video of the drop-tine buck pulled his cards and here’s what he got. Huge drop w/mass, dream buck! And look who is traveling in the bachelor group with the drop, another giant, this one w/incredible tine length (pictures 2 and 3 below). And our good friends Zac and Ellie had been watching a couple bucks for the past 2 weeks. One day when the wind was right they snuck in, set up a camera and captured the great picture below. Fantastic work guys. From these cam images and others I'm seeing, I now officially proclaim that 2014 will be a big rack year, much better than last year. Send me your trail camera images to get us even more fired up, [...]
