Deer Pawing at Ticks

My friend Dr. Grant Woods (www.growingdeer.tv) says deer paw at the pests to remove them this time of year: “Deer have difficulty grooming the area behind their head. I have images of deer that have pawed and/or rubbed enough to cut their skin in this area while trying to remove ticks. The secondary infection from this can cause problems.” Ever seen deer licking and grooming areas they can reach in the summer? This could be to pull off ticks. Grant does not know if deer pull off and consume the ticks, as people believe.

When Hogs Get Your Deer…

There are an estimated 2-3 million feral hogs in Texas, and those numbers might triple in the next five years. The hogs are causing all sorts of damage. As we have documented here, they get some fawns every year. I had not heard that pigs can find and destroy a deer you shot, like a coyote might, until now. Blogger Wren sent this: “We have hog problems on both ranches I hunt, in the Edwards Plateau area and in Webb County down in South Texas. I have not personally seen hogs feasting on fawns, but I can attest to what hogs can do to downed deer. Very much like the damage coyotes can inflict. My oldest son Todd shot a [...]

BIG DEER’s Best Lady Hunter!

From this profile I wrote for realtree.com a few years ago: Lisa Brunner is one of the best big-buck huntresses in America. I first became acquainted with this lady in 2006, back when I was blogging for Outdoor Life. Out of the blue her husband, Jeff, sent me an email that read: “My wife Lisa shot this buck on the gun opener in Wisconsin. He scored 185 gross and 179 5/8 net; a 6x6 with one sticker. Big time massive, nearly 7” mass between the G2 and G3. I was impressed and made it a point to keep up with this lady, and I have. Since then I have blogged several times about Lisa and her hunting exploits. Like the [...]

Tom Taylor’s Wisconsin Bow Giant (226 4/8 Net)

\ Next week we will be traveling across Wisconsin and filming hunters who have shot giant bucks, telling their stories and featuring their bucks for a special episode of BIG DEER TV to air later this fall. Here’s one of those bucks that appeared on the blog in 2010:   Tom Taylor has more than one reason to remember September 26, 2009. That was the day he was married—and the day a giant buck stepped in front of his trail camera. After Tom returned home from his Mexican honeymoon he retrieved the camera and couldn’t believe the image he saw. He named the gnarly-racked deer “Wedding Crasher.” The 09 season came and went, and Tom never saw the buck. The next [...]

Biggest Threat to Deer Hunting

2020-06-10T09:23:33-04:00July 10th, 2013|BigDeer, Hunting News|13 Comments

A poll by huntersurvey.com found that 23 percent, or one in 4 hunters, lost access to private land they had hunted for years, or at least had their access to that land significantly restricted. Looking inside those numbers, 52 percent of the respondents who had lost access said their hunting time was reduced as a result; 11 percent said the loss of land/access kept them from hunting altogether.  In short, they threw in the towel. Land changes ownership…properties are sold and subdivided…well-off  sportsmen and clubs lease up ground--all reasons the average deer hunter is getting squeezed off the best lands with the best deer hunting. This loss of access is the biggest threat to whitetail hunting. How can we retain [...]
