How Far Can a Buck Smell You?

For more than 50 years Leonard Lee Rue III has observed, researched, photographed and written about deer. He has done as much to educate the American public and hunters on the ways of the whitetail than anyone. Rue observes that a day with high humidity (between 50 and 70 percent), temperature between 50 and 70 and with a light breeze make for ideal scenting conditions for a buck. “Under such conditions I believe a deer could detect a human’s scent from at least one-half mile,” he says. Rue points out that rain and snow knock down your scent molecules, and colder weather later in fall/winter makes it harder for a buck to pick up and sort out your scent. I [...]

More and more pictures are rolling in. Send any you get, they get us all fired up for hunting season. I’ll never reveal the location.—M.H. This is a nice Southside VA 10-pointer. Love our VA bucks! Louis got this awesome, incredibly sharp shot of a pair of shooters. Bob sent two. The doe and fawns are a beautiful work of nature. Bob named this buck “Crowbar” and hopes to get a crack at him soon.

Confirmed: Gray Wolf Shot in Kentucky

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 15th, 2013|BigDeer, Hunting News, Predator Hunting|Comments Off on Confirmed: Gray Wolf Shot in Kentucky

Back in March, James Troyer shot an animal while predator hunting on his family's farm in Hart County. He walked up and saw it was much larger than a coyote. "I was like - wow - that thing was big!" he recalled. "It looked like a wolf, but who is going to believe I shot a wolf?" Because a free-ranging wolf has not been seen in Kentucky for more than 100 years, biologists were skeptical. Troyer convinced Kevin Raymond, a biologist for the Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources, to look at the animal. Once Raymond saw the animal was twice the size of a coyote he contacted furbearer biologist Laura Patton, who submitted samples to federal officials for DNA testing. [...]

Legendary James Jordan Buck

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 14th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|5 Comments

When you walk into the Cabela’s store in Green Bay, Wisconsin, you see this full-body mount of the Jordan buck, which was shot 99 years ago this fall. The story of this deer is fascinating: One day in 1914 near Danbury, Wisconsin, James Jordan followed some huge deer tracks in the snow. A train roared by and its grind and whistle startled a group of deer, including a monster buck. James threw up his rifle and cracked off a few shots. His last bullet felled the giant. Jim took the 400-pound buck to a local taxidermist. Little did he know he would not see his trophy again for 50 years. The taxidermist moved away and took the rack with him. [...]

Hunters: Chlorophyll For Scent Control?

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 13th, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management, Deer Science|3 Comments

Chlorophyll pills are sometimes prescribed to people with extreme bad breath or body odor. Some people use chlorophyll for detoxification, which is in vogue with the hip crowd today. About 30 years ago hunters picked up on this, and started using chlorophyll pills in an effort to help eliminate human odor at the metabolic level. Hunters also chewed gum containing chlorophyll to cut down on breath odor. I wonder if the green tablets or gum really worked for hunter scent control? Probably not, because you don’t see it or hear about it much anymore. Did any of you ever try the pills or gum? I never did, it just seemed over the top to me. My scent control has always [...]
