GA’s Coosawattee WMA: Another Giant Buck (178”) in 2016

Back in 2011 I posted: Who knew such monster bucks were coming off WMAs in Georgia? From what I am finding out this state has some of the best public hunting in the nation, maybe the best. The Georgia DNR is doing things right and giving all hunters, not just the lucky ones with access to private land, a fair shot at killing a giant, and for a nominal $20 permit fee. The 5,600-acre Coosawattee WMA in the mountains of northwest Georgia is the shining star of these public lands. Leased annually and managed cooperatively with private landowners, this WMA offers better and more varied hunting than your typical state- or federally-owned lands, many of which are overcrowded, underfunded and [...]

Today's guest blog from Paul McGregor, who is from Ohio and lives in Georgia now: Mike: I still have family in Ohio and have hunted there my whole life. About 5 years ago my buddy and I really started managing the Ohio farm we hunt. It didn't take long for results to start showing. I run some 9 cameras on 500 acres. One October, we got pictures of a true giant. I hunted him hard all year as the wind would allow to no avail. I think the deer actually had me patterned, ha! Two times I got pictures of him at my stand 15-20 minutes after I had left the stand. Last year I got pics of a cool [...]

Today’s great guest post from longtime BIG DEER supporter Nate Grossman. Thanks Nate! Hi Mike: I wanted to write you about my beautiful wife, Makayla, the mother of my gorgeous baby girl. I'm definitely proud of her, and I definitely consider this bragging! October 2015 was her first experience deer hunting. She knows how passionate I am about it, and we got her an early muzzleloader tag so we could share some time in the woods together. Our hunting plans happily took a back seat after we found out we would soon become parents, but we still managed to get out a few times in ‘15. Makayla’s first season ended with a thrilling but unsuccessful last day/last light stalk on [...]

My great friend Grant Kuypers of Buck Paradise Outfitters, who you have seen me hunt with many times on TV, had an unreal season in 2016. Grant wrote: One morning in October: I don't get to hunt much with the business but was lucky enough to have some time after the ag harvest and before whitetail season. What a great morning it turned out to be! Left the house to head to the farm with a mule deer tag I had drawn in my pocket. Took the long route to get there and came upon this awesome heavy old muley. Love hunting with my muzzleloader! One day in November: I had a few hours off and went out at 3 [...]

Guest post from Big Daddy, who has stuck with me on the blog since I launched in 2008. This is one of the coolest posts I can remember, and one of the most satisfying for me:   Mike: Once again early November proved to be a big buck's downfall. I posted on your rattling tips blog the other day about working on this buck with the horns: Big Daddy on November 7, 2016 at 10:59 am said: "I have been hunting hard for one certain buck since October 12th except for a few days I took off to hunt mule deer in Montana the third week of October. I have seen him twice with no shot either time. Today, Nov. [...]
