South Carolina: Krista’s 200-Pound Buck!

Still August and we have our first big deer on the ground! My hunting buddy Krista, who stared leukemia in the face and beat it, shot this bruiser the other night. When I saw him stroll out into the food plot in the fading light, I knew he was at least 5 years old. The guy who manages the plantation where we hunted has seen this buck for a few years, and figures he’s 6 or 7. Last year the deer’s rack had the same strong left side, and a lesser 4-point right side. This year his right side was just a huge spike, with a weird 3-inch kicker at the antler base. Injured or was that right side going [...]

Top 10 Tactics on BIG DEER TV!

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 7th, 2013|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management|3 Comments

Tonight on the show (8 and 11 PM Eastern on Sportsman Channel) I lay out my Top 10 whitetail tactics, one or a few of which I hope will help you shoot a giant this fall. Here’s an example from the script: # 3 Hunt Terrain, Not Sign (with graphic): “Many hunters find hot rubs and scrapes and rush out to hang a tree stand right beside it. Sometimes that works out, but there’s a better way to do it. Hot sign is obviously important because it tells you bucks are in the area and active. Then scout out from those rubs/scrapes/trails for 50 yards, 100, even 200 yards. Find those draws, creek crossings, points of ridges...that bucks have traveled for years, [...]

Giant Bucks on Trail Camera!

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 5th, 2013|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Management|4 Comments

Ok, the big deer are starting to show up. The guys at Huntography posted this monster the other day.  Word is the rack might go 200”; I don’t know about that, but it is the biggest buck we have seen so far this summer. I would have been hunting the giant above, but I didn’t draw a tag for that area/state. Heartbreaker! I count at least 14 points! This big 8 is living on a farm where I will be hunting in November. I’m hoping for a 10-point, but if this tall-tined 8 comes by I’ll probably take him.

Remington’s Model 783 on BIG DEER TV

2020-06-10T09:23:33-04:00July 17th, 2013|Big Deer TV, BigDeer|1 Comment

On tonight’s episode--8 and 11 PM Eastern on Sportsman Channel--you’ll get an-depth look at how the new Model 783 bolt-action hunting rifle was conceived, designed and built. Then you’ll watch as Remington’s John Fink attempts to shoot the first-ever buck with the 783. Note: That 2-shot group you see me shoot at the range is for real. First time I had ever touched that particular Model 783 (and trigger), topped with a 3X-9X Trijicon Accupoint scope. My first 2 shots ever with the rifle, and with Remington’s new Hypersonic 150-grain Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded ammo. Extreme cold, and a stiff crosswind. Got it on the first take, man, I got 3 witnesses.

BIG DEER’s Best Lady Hunter!

2020-06-10T09:23:33-04:00July 12th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV, BigDeer|4 Comments

From this profile I wrote for realtree.com a few years ago: Lisa Brunner is one of the best big-buck huntresses in America. I first became acquainted with this lady in 2006, back when I was blogging for Outdoor Life. Out of the blue her husband, Jeff, sent me an email that read: “My wife Lisa shot this buck on the gun opener in Wisconsin. He scored 185 gross and 179 5/8 net; a 6x6 with one sticker. Big time massive, nearly 7” mass between the G2 and G3. I was impressed and made it a point to keep up with this lady, and I have. Since then I have blogged several times about Lisa and her hunting exploits. Like the [...]
