Texas: 34-Inch Spike Buck!
Joe sent this photo and asked: Mike, is this the biggest spike you have ever seen? Joe, it’s definitely one of the biggest. Our research shows that it was shot by Charles Herber III in 2012, and he entered it into the famous Muy Grande Deer contest in Freer, Texas. The spikes totaled 34 inches! Pretty sure it won the contest’s “longest spike” division that year. What an amazing trophy!
Thanking Rand Paul
We all need to stand up and thank Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) for putting a hold on Dr. Vivek Murthy, President Obama’s pick for Surgeon General of the United States. A hold is a parliamentary procedure that allows a Senator to prevent a motion (Murthy’s nomination) from reaching a vote on the Senate floor. As this article points out, Paul wrote in a letter to Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada): “Historically, the Surgeon General of the United States has been a position with the purpose of educating Americans so that they may lead healthier lives, rather than advancing a political agenda.” Murthy’s agenda? Very anti-gun. Wrote Sen. Paul: “The primary policy goals of Dr. Murthy’s organization (Doctors for America) have been [...]
Top Deer Pack: Timber Hawk Rut Buster
I used the Timber Hawk Rut Buster all over the country last fall and was impressed. One of the best daypacks for deer hunting I’ve ever used. Mid-size (not bulky but plenty of space), durable, comfortable (great shoulder straps), lightweight and quiet. Easy to stalk with or haul up in a tree stand and hang nearby. Some features I like: --2 small low front pockets, one perfect for rangefinder and/or GPS. --Small, fleece-lined top slot on back of pack for smartphone. --Deep main compartment for Scent Killer Gold bottle, spotting scope, lunch, etc. --Several small inner pockets and slots with zippers for flashlight, grunt call, etc. --Deep and accessible/adjustable rear pouch for spare coat, rattle horns, etc. --2 low side water bottle slots. [...]
Biggest “Cactus Buck” Ever?
I saw this photo on the Bowhunting.com Facebook and wondered: Is that sucker the biggest cactus buck ever? Although cactus bucks are rare, I’ve seen a good number of them over the years. But nothing approaching the gnarly mass that this one has. I have no idea where this freak was shot. Many people will think this buck had his balls injured or torn off (ouch!), but this explanation from Matt Knox (15th paragraph down), deer project coordinator for Virginia, fits to a tee: A unique male antler anomaly is a “cactus” buck. These bucks suffer from very low testosterone production due to hypogonadism or cryptochidism (i.e., their testicles are the size of a green pea or never descend from [...]
