A report released last year by the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports documented a 4.9% increase in hunting license sales from 2019 to 2020. One of the few bright spots of COVID is that it produced a rekindled interest in deer hunting across the United States as people sought to get outside, do something new and try to harvest their own food. To continue monitoring the pandemic’s impact on hunting, the Council revisited this study in early 2022 to identify ongoing changes and emerging trends in hunters’ rates of license purchases. 1) While you’re out working your land with a tractor this summer, try this. Bush-hog a strip of grass or mow a lane through a thicket right up to one or two of your favorite tree stand locations near a field. Keep those lanes trimmed one more time in late August. Deer will find and use the paths. One day later this fall, a big 8-pointer might walk smack down the strip to your bow stand. I just returned from shooting an Axis deer TV show in the western Hill Country of Texas. During my hunt, daytimes temperatures ranged from 95 to 100 degrees. I was struck not only by the heat, but the incredibly dry and brown country. It hadn't rained measurably in months, and the habitat showed. The 2 bucks we shot were beautiful animals (mine pictured below, shot near a waterhole), but noticeably smaller and less body heavy than they would have been in a year of normal precipitation.
