When we shoot at a deer and miss from a tree stand, most of the time the arrow sticks partway in the ground with broadhead buried. But sometimes a shaft deflects off a limb or sapling, sails and comes to rest on the ground or tangled in brush with broadhead blades exposed, and potentially dangerous to a hiker or another hunter that walks through the area. After a blown shot, we should always try to find and retrieve our arrows to prevent a freak accident from occurring. Not to mention that we can save $15 to $20 by finding and reusing that shaft and broadhead! Arrow Finding Tips Wrap shafts in fluorescent orange, yellow or green that is easy to [...]

Iowa’s 2022 deer harvest increased 7 percent over the 2021 season, due, in part to the new Excess Tag January Antlerless Season approved by the Iowa Legislature last spring. “A lot of hunters chose to participate in the new season, and the harvest was on par or a little above the other firearms seasons,” said Jace Elliott, state deer biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Hunters reported more than 2,500 deer taken during the Excess Tag January Antlerless Season, thanks, in part, to favorable weather across the state.” Overall, hunters tagged deer at a rate of 30-35 percent which is similar to previous years, for a total reported harvest of more than 109,600 deer. Deer harvest varied regionally, [...]

Troy Dietterich sent this photo and email: I may have shot a Bullwinkle nose deer. I have it butchered and in my freezer, and plan to eat it as it is mixed in with my other deer meat.  I did not contact any state departments about this and just stumbled upon this issue as a friend sent me the article. Southeastern PA, WMU 5C Killed Oct 29 2022 A.M. This deer was the biggest one around. This area rarely produces deer larger than 120''. This buck scored 153 6/8'' gross and weighed 246# live weight and 192# dressed. Just a massive animal for these parts. I butchered the deer myself and the meat and bones/joints all looked healthy. I did [...]

South Dakota: 200-Inch Giant Bow Buck

From our friends at North American Whitetail: “This deer is incredible,” Sam Vedvei says. “I’m still a little in disbelief that I was the one to kill it. These opportunities do not come by very often. It is surreal to see a deer of that caliber on the hoof. It’s a testament to being familiar with the deer and knowing how they travel and respond to the area. I didn’t pattern the deer, but I patterned the deer in the area.” Read the entire story here.

I was hunting up in Saskatchewan several years ago when a local fellow asked if I would like to go see one of the top whitetail racks in the history of hunting. “Hell yeah!” I hollered and off we went to the small town of Debden. I remember standing in Tiggy’s kitchen and holding that amazing rack, shocked that is was just a skull mount! Tiggy, a truck driver by trade and a nice, unassuming guy, gave me the quick version of the story. He had finished his run early one October day in 2003, so he decided to go bowhunting for a while, hoping to shoot a doe for the freezer. He wasn’t in the stand long when this [...]
