Here is a tip of the day you might never have thought about: Whenever you set a tree stand for bowhunting, scan the ground around it out to 50 yards or so, and look for a good-size log, brushy treetop or similar barrier that might block a buck from walking within 30 yards of your stand on natural movement. It amazes me how many hunters fail to do this. They end up sitting and watching deer after deer skirt a log or treetop and veer 10 to 30 yards away from their stand, and out of bow range. If you’re able, drag a log or fallen tree away from the area and stash it 80 yards or so downwind. Better [...]

Every year you plan to scout like a wild man, but then come work deadlines, kids’ ball games, chores around the house… Sound familiar? If so, don’t worry that you won’t get your buck because you don’t have time to do your homework. Squeeze a little “speed scouting” into your schedule and you should do all right. Whether you’ll hunt new ground or a familiar place. begin scouting from your den. Spend a couple of evenings studying topographical maps and aerial photographs, zeroing in on four “deer activity zones” (DAZ): Openings—crop fields, food plots, pastures, rights-of-way, clear-cuts or burns--where bucks feed and commingle with does. Security zones—large thickets, swamps, overgrown fields, etc.—where mature bucks go when the guns start booming. [...]

Need a new tree stand or two this season? Consider these tips before shelling out several hundred dollars of hard-earned money. Choose a fixed-position stand if: You hunt a place with lots of crooked or stunted trees with low-growing branches (a climber won’t work here). You typically hang 3 or 4 stands and leave them in the same spots all season. You’re reasonably fit. Hanging and pulling fixed perches and steps are hard work. You’re a stickler for concealment. A fixed-position stand is the smallest of the lot, and it’s the easiest to hide high in a tree. Choose a climbing stand if: There are plenty of straight trees 8 to 20 inches in diameter where you hunt. You don’t [...]

After supper on August evenings my buddy Rick strolls down to the barn behind his house, anchors a spotting scope on a fence post and glasses the deer that come to munch the Imperial Clover that he sows in his 10-acre back field. At dusk 2 or 3 nice 8-pointers generally show up with a couple of spindly bucks, and a few does. Rick studies the bucks and patterns where and they walk out of the woods that border the field. Every fall he hangs a tree stand inside the wood line and tags one of the best deer. You can scout and hunt like that if you own or lease a 20- to 50-acre tract of mixed fields, woods [...]

Last weekend at the Pope & Young Club’s Annual Convention in Reno, Nevada, the Kansas monster was officially panel scored and confirmed as the second-highest-scoring non-typical whitetail ever taken by a bowhunter. COVID postponed the panel scoring of this crazy buck, which Brian Butcher shot back on October 10, 2019, but now it’s official. Field & Stream has the full story, click here to read it.
