How To Scout Deer On 50 Acres

After supper on August evenings my buddy Rick strolls down to the barn behind his house, anchors a spotting scope on a fence post and glasses the deer that come to munch the Imperial Clover that he sows in his 10-acre back field. At dusk 2 or 3 nice 8-pointers generally show up with a couple of spindly bucks, and a few does. Rick studies the bucks and patterns where and they walk out of the woods that border the field. Every fall he hangs a tree stand inside the wood line and tags one of the best deer. You can scout and hunt like that if you own or lease a 20- to 50-acre tract of mixed fields, woods [...]

Last weekend at the Pope & Young Club’s Annual Convention in Reno, Nevada, the Kansas monster was officially panel scored and confirmed as the second-highest-scoring non-typical whitetail ever taken by a bowhunter. COVID postponed the panel scoring of this crazy buck, which Brian Butcher shot back on October 10, 2019, but now it’s official. Field & Stream has the full story, click here to read it.

What Makes A Big-Buck Hotspot?

An old-timer once told me, “Boy, you can be the best damn hunter in the world, but if you don’t hunt where big deer live, you ain’t never gonna kill one.” The longer I’ve hunted, the more I’ve realized that guy was right. Many damn good hunters make the mistake of hunting year after year on lands that don’t grow and hold mature deer. So all they ever shoot are 6- and 8-pointers. Well, let’s change that. New Ground Now is the time to get out of your rut and find a new spot to hunt this fall. With whitetail populations healthy to stable in most regions, you shouldn’t have to look far. A small woodland or maybe a 300-acre farm [...]

Summer Whitetail Scouting Plan

To tie your tag to a big whitetail in 2021, the advance work you do right now is as important, maybe more so, as the hunt tactics you’ll employ in a few of months.  Here’s your 5-step plan. Chart a Course   With the A/C cranking in your house or truck, check topo and aerial maps, either old-school paper ones or on an app like Onx Hunt, of the lands you’ll hunt this fall. Study the contours of crop fields, pastures and woodland edges. Key on timber strips, draws, creeks and similar funnels that connect potential feeding and bedding areas of deer. Scan the maps and visualize the likely patterns of bucks. If you’ve hunted a property before think back [...]

How To Protect Your Tree Stands

When you leave a tree stand out in the woods overnight on public land, that stand becomes public domain and therefore anybody can use it. That might be the law in most states, but in the deer hunter’s code of conduct it’s a bunch of BS. Anybody who would hunt another man’s stand, public or private, without permission is a skunk. If it’s legal in your state and you decide to set a stand and leave it up for days, here are 3 things you can do to keep a squatter out: If you use a lock-on, remove the bottom ladder step and haul it out when you leave after a hunt. A bit of a hassle, but nobody can [...]
