Alabama: New Bill Would Expand Baiting for Deer

The Montgomery Adviser reports that a bill working its way through the Alabama legislature would allow hunters more options for using bait to lure deer and hogs. It passed the house Tuesday and heads to the state senate for consideration. The new bill would not only expand baiting in Alabama, but also clear up confusion due to a law that went into effect just last hunting season. That current law allows hunters to use “supplemental feed” if the feed source is at least 100 yards away from the hunter and out of his or her direct line of sight. That law caused confusion among hunters and, I suspect, game wardens last season. Just what does “out of sight” mean?  Suppose [...]

Bottle Kills Whitetail Buck

Two weeks ago, somebody dropped an old chair and a refrigerator in a parking lot of the state forest where I hike with my dog. I reported it to the authorities, but nobody seemed to give a damn; I doubt a deputy checked it out. I suspect the litterbug knew that, because yesterday, a few hundred yards from the first dump site, I found an old TV rolled off the road, down a bank and into a creek. This pretty little state forest is becoming some criminal’s personal trash pit. With littering on my mind and mad as hell about it, this article and picture from QDMA hit me hard and made me even angrier. The other day some guys [...]

Clinton’s Dismissive Anti-Hunting Remarks Offend All Sportsmen

2020-06-10T09:16:46-04:00August 8th, 2016|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Hunting News|9 Comments

Hillary Clinton was interrupted by a few animal rights protesters at a rally in Las Vegas last week. Secret Service agents rushed to her aid and the incident was diffused. Clinton then joked that the kooky activists must have been there to protest Donald Trump. “Trump and his kids have killed a lot of animals,” she said. “Thank you for making that point.” Hillary proceeded to screech that grating laugh, and the fawning crowd cheered wildly. Well, I did not cheer when I heard those remarks on the radio. In 16 words, Hillary unabashedly trashed America’s 13 million hunters. Not only were the remarks offensive and disrespectful to all sportsmen, in the literal sense “Trump and his kids” have shot [...]

Penn. Poacher Loses Hunting License for 50 Years

Charles Harr, Jr., 19, had his day in court earlier this week. Harr was charged with allegedly spotlighting deer, killing some 11 animals. Two accomplices were apprehended and later cited on the crime spree last year. An 18-year-old friend and, get this, Harr’s father, Charles Harr, Sr. who officers believe was in the process of helping his son butcher and dispose of the illegal deer. That is one of the saddest examples of fathering that I have ever heard of in the outdoor world. But unfortunately it is not uncommon. I have reported on many poaching incidents in my outdoor journalism career, and many if not most of them involve family. The judge handed down the same old weak fines--$16,400 [...]

Ultimate Air-Travel Guide: How to Fly With Guns

2020-06-10T09:16:47-04:00June 22nd, 2016|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Hunting News, Remington|4 Comments

I have flown hundreds of thousands miles with hunting guns in the last 30 years, on all the major carriers and in tiny bush planes, to cities and small towns across the U.S and Canada. While I have had minor hassles (you can’t fly anywhere with or without guns without some grief) I have not, knock on a walnut stock, had a major incident with any airline or Transportation Security Authority (TSA) employee or officer. I have had 3 gun cases not make it to my final destination (knock wood harder) and those were only delayed a day. Three incidents in some 600 trips spread over 3 decades isn’t bad. The reason I’ve had good fortune: I know the rules [...]
