WA: Deer Poacher Gets 5 Years in Prison

In a 2012-2013 killing spree that investigators dubbed the “Headless Deer Case,” Garret Victor James Elsburg, 25, was suspected of killing dozens of bucks, decapitating them and leaving their bodies to rot. Washington Fish and Wildlife officers were able to confiscate some of the heads, match them to the carcasses and eventually bust Elsburg. Like many criminals Elsburg was a braggart, and that helped to get him caught. He apparently posted many pictures of himself holding the severed deer heads on Facebook and other sites.  In one photo he wore a T-shirt reading “Damn I’m Good” while smiling and hoisting the head of a trophy mule deer. “These were the most flagrant acts of poaching in my 25 years as a game [...]

Should it be a Felony to Hunt Deer Without Permission?

2020-06-10T09:22:50-04:00May 16th, 2014|BigDeer, Hunting News|7 Comments

From the US Sportsmen’s Alliance: A bill being considered in the Rhode Island legislature would make hunting for deer on private land without permission a felony level offense. …House Bill 7858 would also require jail time (up to two years) for anyone who hunts deer on private land without written permission. The state’s Department of Environmental Management and Rhode Island sportsmen’s clubs have testified against the bill as being “unnecessary and excessively punitive.” I agree. While I hate those who knowingly trespass and poach as much as anybody this bill has the potential for trouble. You know how difficult it can be to determine exact property lines in the woods. Some (most) are not clearly marked and/or posted. Suppose you [...]

Rate Your 2013-14 Deer Season

2020-06-10T09:22:50-04:00May 9th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Management, Deer Science, Hunting News, Predator Hunting|12 Comments

The results of QDMA's unscientific poll reveal about what I expected--that in about half the country, the whitetail herds are trending in a negative way. Based on the number of deer and the number of bucks you saw last season, how would you vote? Leave a reply below so we can see if the BIG DEER numbers jibe with QDMA's. I'll comment first. I vote "blue down" because the 2013-14 season was one of my hardest in the last 15 years. I hunted from Canada to Wisconsin to New York to Nebraska, and it was tough everywhere. I even had to push it on two Texas hunts to shoot bucks. It's not supposed to be hard in Texas, but it was for me. In the end I shot some nice bucks, [...]

Earth Day: The Ecological Argument for Deer Hunting

2020-06-10T09:23:02-04:00April 22nd, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Science, Hunting News|Comments Off on Earth Day: The Ecological Argument for Deer Hunting

On this Earth Day, I point you to a fantastic and enlightening passage written some years ago by two of America’s top deer biologists, Drs. Larry Marchinton and Karl Miller. In the United States roughly 3 million white-tailed deer are harvested each year… This translates to about 150 million pounds of meat. Add to this the amount of elk, turkey, squirrel, rabbit and other game as well as wild fruits, nuts, and vegetables that is consumed. To produce this amount of beef, chicken, or vegetable crops in addition to that which is already produced would be ecologically devastating. Acres and acres of wild places would have to be destroyed to accommodate this increased agricultural production. More wildlife habitat would have [...]

22LR: Why Still a Shortage?

2020-06-10T09:23:03-04:00April 14th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Guns & Loads, Hunting News|8 Comments

The ammo shortage of the last few years has gotten better, but why it is it still hard to find .22 LR in some places? Three reasons, according to this Sierra Bullets blog. Some gun owners are hoarding bricks of .22 in basements, garages and “prepper” bunkers, fearing they might not be able to get the ammo again in the near future--or ever. The blog’s writer, Matt Reams, says this is a “minor factor.” But I think it is a big factor. People know about President Obama’s and Holder’s views on guns (should I say hatred of) and then they envision 4 to 8 years of Hillary out there. No wonder people are hoarding ammo. Then there are the gougers who prey on the anxiety of [...]
