So far, it’s not been a terrible summer for deer deaths due to Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), but it’s still early in September. The disease typically rears its ugly head starting in August each year and runs through the first frosty weather of October. Here are the 2021 outbreaks we know of: Idaho: The most sick and dead whitetails are showing up in the West. Idaho Fish and Wildlife has confirmed positive cases of EHD in samples taken from dead deer in the Clearwater area. Reports of 250-300 dead deer and counting. Washington: 36 deer near the town of Colfax are believed to have died from EHD. Two dead whitetails near Davenport tested positive. “We are bracing ourselves for this [...]

The recent and shocking USDA study that found that 33% of tested wild whitetails were exposed to the COVID-19 virus brings up 2 huge questions as we prepare to hit the woods and shoot deer this season. One, could you get the virus from a deer you kill and handle? The USDA’s Animal and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) says there is no evidence that any animal, including deer, plays a significant role in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to people. Based on the available information, the risk of animals spreading COVID-19 to people is low. But they do say further research is needed. Is a deer you kill this fall safe to eat? APHIS says there is no evidence that people [...]

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) recently completed a study that analyzed serum samples from free-ranging whitetail deer for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Results indicate that certain deer populations in Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania were exposed to the virus that causes COVID 19. APHIS collected 481 samples between January 2020 and March 2021 from Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania. Scientists detected SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in 33 percent of those samples. The results varied by state: Illinois = 7 percent of 101 samples contained antibodies; Michigan = 67 percent of 113 samples; New York = 19 percent of 68 samples; and Pennsylvania = 31 percent of 199 samples. It should be pointed out that there [...]

URGENT! Two of the nation’s top pro-gun groups urge all law-abiding gun owners to contact their U.S. Senators and tell them to vote NO on David Chipman’s controversial nomination to be Director of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Chipman previously worked at the ATF for nearly 25 years, but currently serves as a policy advisor for Giffords, a gun control advocacy group o-founded by Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ). NRA-ILA Executive Director Jason Ouimet released the following statement on Thursday regarding David Chipman’s party line vote out of Senate Judiciary Committee: “David Chipman spent the last 10 years unapologetically lobbying for gun control on Capitol Hill.... He supports extreme, unconstitutional restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms, and today’s [...]

Will Americans Be Able To Hunt Deer In Canada in 2021?

Back in September of 2020, as we were all locked down and trying to figure out what the hell the world was coming to, I blogged that with the border closed and no Americans going to Canada and spending $5,000-plus apiece to hunt for a big deer (closer to 8 Grand once you figure in airfare, incidentals, taxidermy, etc.) there would be a lot of pain in the outfitting business. But for the Canadian guides who could hang on and stay in business, this would lead to some spectacular opportunities in 2021, 2022 and beyond. With virtually no pressure in 2020, the bucks were able to mature and grow another year, creating better age structure and thousands of bigger deer [...]
