Shed nut Kelly from South Dakota reports from his last 2 weekends, during which he walked 43 miles, give or take:  Went to a new place two weekends ago, northwest SD. Logged 16 miles Saturday and about 7 Sunday for a total of 23 miles. I picked 18 on Sat. and 4 on Sun., almost one antler per mile. In the picture above you can actually see where the shed dropped through the snow, pretty neat. Another long walk last weekend turned up 29 more antlers. With deep snow piles gone the grass is laid flat, and old antlers missed from last year show up. Found about 50% fresh antlers and 50% old last weekend, including 4 nice ones [...]

Big Saskatchewan Shed!

Our friend Amanda w/Buck Country Outfitters in Saskatchewan found this great matching set the other day. Three common characteristics of the racks up there jump out: dark, almost black in color (the color of used motor oil is a term I've written many times); good mass, almost a clubby look, though great tine length on these antlers; and short brow tines, which cost many bucks up there 5-10 inches in score. Let's say this buck puts on 20 more inches of bone this summer (but no junk), he'll be in the 170s gross typical w/not many inches of deduction, although his right side is a tad weaker. He could in the best case scenario net 170 book. And if the winter weather holds, he and [...]

6 Best Shed-Hunting Tips

Find some bone this weekend: First thing, just go...and go and go. A lot of people have no luck because they look on one or two properties where the deer may not even be this time of year, or maybe the animals are just passing through to a food source. Get permission to as many farms and woodlands as you can. Then start walking. One of BIG DEER’s best shed hunters, Kelly from South Dakota, told me he walked 19 miles last Saturday and found 8 antlers. Go! But make sure you walk where the deer are. Remember that as a general rule 90 percent of the deer are in 10% of the woods/fields/brush this time of year, where there is something [...]

South Dakota Shed Report: 19 Miles For 8 Antlers

2020-06-10T09:16:59-04:00February 11th, 2016|BigDeer, Shed Hunting|1 Comment

Hey Mike: Have made a few more trips shed hunting, logged 19.25 miles last Saturday and found 8. Still fighting lots of snow but just cannot sit on the couch! The area I was in Saturday still had a bunch of bucks carrying, they are the hardest ones to find! One area 2 weeks ago had a super buck in it, he was not there this weekend or has dropped. I will spend a lot of time trying for those 2 antlers, may be some of the biggest for me ever. Will keep you posted, Kelly Send us your shed hunting reports to share.

The first shed report of 2016 is in from Kelly Kirsch, one of the best and most passionate antler hunters we have here on BIG DEER. Thanks Kelly and keep us posted w/future updates: Mike: It has started in southeast SD. I watched this deer two weeks ago, he put his head down to feed and when he lifted it up again the antlers were gone! Went out the next afternoon so as to not spook the other bucks from the area, and here is what I found. A matched set is the way to start! They were picked 1-6-2016. We have tons of snow cover here so it will be awhile before it’s worth the walking.--Kelly      Cool, everybody send me [...]
