A Michigan hunter named Goose saw me shoot several bucks recently on TV with a Marlin Model 336 in .35 Rem. and he had to have one. He ordered his .35 lever more than a year ago, and has been waiting patiently for it since. I can’t imagine not pulling out my phone and taking some pictures of every buck I shoot. Whether it’s a 6-pointer or big 10, every deer and the hunt for it is a treasure. Good photos help you preserve the memories. Notice I said GOOD photos. And RESPECTABLE ones. Here’s how to take them: Pose with a deer in the natural setting where you shot it--oak ridge, river bottom, swamp, etc. Try to avoid roads or houses in the background. Photos of a buck or your mowed lawn or worse, in the bed of a pickup, aren’t great. Position the deer so that the sun shines on its hide and rack. For whitetail hunters, what’s a hot scent attractant to use in early November? Try a dead doe! Missouri biologist Dr. Grant Woods has on occasion shot a mature doe and let the dead deer lie in front of his stand. “The smell of an adult doe, especially one in a pre-receptive or receptive stage, is a great attractant to mature bucks,” he says. “I’ve shot several bucks while they were actually sniffing the doe I had harvested earlier in the hunt.” Grant says that even the disturbance of a single rifle shot doesn’t matter when bucks are moving and rutting. “I realize this is contrary to popular belief, but it can work,” he says.
