13 Best Days To Hunt Deer This November

November 5-8 Regardless of weather, moon or other environmental conditions, the vast majority of does in the northern two-thirds of America will be bred between November 6 and Thanksgiving. That was true 50 years ago…will be true this year…will be true 20 years from now. Historically, November 5 to 8 have been some of the top big-buck days within this window. Why so good? Most bucks haven’t bred a doe for a year. They wander around in a testosterone stupor, waiting on the first does to pop into heat any day now. These four days are some of the best of the year to see a big buck on his feet in daylight. Take off if you can. Best conditions: [...]

Nov. 2: Indiana Deer Rut Report

Great update this morning from our friend Dean Weimer.  Things are looking good here in Indiana right now. I got reports that the south side of my buddy's farm had 2 bucks fighting over a presumed hot doe Saturday a.m. by goose hunters that were out in the corn stubble on the farm. Then a buddy of mine who lives out in that same area saw a big mature "8 or 10 pointer" crossing into my buddy's land at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The buck was alone and didn't seem to be spooked. I knew I had to go check it out. Yesterday afternoon I went out and threw up a blind in the fencerow very close to the woodlot in [...]

Whitetail Bucks Rut Behavior In November

It’s November 1 and the seeking phase of the rut is beginning or in full swing in most regions (except the Deep South). Some bucks begin to expand their range, wandering out of their home core areas to take the estrus temperature of does within 1,000 acres or so. Other big boys roam closer to home, especially in broken farmland where feed and cover are prime. If 2 dominant deer cross paths, a hair-raising stare down or a heavyweight fight might break out. Watch for a buck “lip curling,” or sniffing a doe’s urine to check her state of estrus. Bucks keep blazing rubs and pawing scrapes. Around November 5, give or take a few days, the seeking phase launches [...]

You Shoot A Deer At Last Light, Should You Leave It Overnight?

Short answer is, no. I’ve had several bad experiences with bucks I’ve shot at last light and left overnight. If the meat didn't flat out spoil, it sure tasted funky. I won’t leave a buck out now if the temperature is 40 degrees or above. And 40 is marginal, I believe you need the night air to dip down into the low 30s or cooler to have any hope of salvaging good, tasty meat from a deer that has lain on the ground, blood and guts in, for 12 hours or more. This is the most agonizing dilemma that I hope you are not forced to deal with this season. But if you are, go back to your truck, relax [...]

Georgia Bowhunter Kills Massive Cryptorchid Buck

From GameandFishmag.com: Last season Georgia hunter Benny Overholt passed a good non-typical buck in velvet that he estimated to be five years old. Fast forward to 2021 when the same buck started showing up on trail cameras, and Overholt noticed there was something decidedly weird about it. He determined that the deer never shed its rack after last season, and remained in velvet the entire time. As a 6 ½-year-old, the buck was essentially sporting a double rack, and still completely in velvet. Overholt knew, if given the opportunity this season, he wouldn't be passing the shot again. Benny shot the massive cryptorchid buck on September 13 and noticed the deer’s testicles had shriveled up, solving the mystery of the [...]
