I have blogged multiple times about the incredible ammo shortage of 2020 and now running into 2021. You’ve felt it and so have I. In fact, for my deer hunting the last 3 months, I had to rummage my ammo stash and dig out a box of 20-year-old-plus Federal Premium .30-06 w/165-grain Trophy Bonded bullet. No complaints, I shot 5 bucks with 5 shots and the old ammo performed beautifully. Here’s an update on the ammunition situation from Federal and Remington, the 2 brands I have hunted with exclusively for the past 2 decades. In a recent story on the Outdoor Life website, Jason Vanderbrink, head man at Federal Premium, explains that before the pandemic hit last February/March, the previous [...]

Hey Mike: The landowner where I hunt here in Indiana asked me to take a year off because he felt deer numbers were down on his property. I’m sure you can imagine how that made a bowhunter feel! I decided to ask a landowner across the road if I could bowhunt his 8.5-acre tract. He said, “Sure young man, nobody else hunts it.” One day last season I slipped into the property with my Lone Wolf and sticks on my back. There were deer beds and sign everywhere! I found 6 walnut trees all bunched together, and I was able to get that stand right in the middle of them. Around 4:50 p.m. I saw antlers and a giant-bodied buck [...]

Post COVID, Deer Camps Will Be Smaller

All doctors and scientists that deal with infectious diseases agree that until this pandemic subsides and we return to some semblance of life as we once knew it, we should limit the number of people we gather and socialize with. I struggled with this last season, as gathering with groups of friends and other hunters in a camp or lodge is an integral part of the hunting experience. But after thinking about it a bunch, I decided to defer to the experts and keep my groups small. I canceled 3 good hunting trips where I knew there would be 10 or more people in camp and more guides and workers and strangers coming and going. I put a 4-person limit [...]

Kansas: 3-Year Quest For 200-Inch “Athos” Buck

Today’s great guest blog by Kansas bowhunter and whitetail fanatic Cody Larrimore: The word “friend” is used in everyday life to describe all sorts of people. However, for the purpose of this story, it should be said from the beginning that when I reference my “friends,” they are not your average ones. They are 4 selfless individuals whose generosity gave me the opportunity at something I only ever dreamed of; something they all personally wanted and something every whitetail hunter wants – a legendary giant. This three-year journey would not have been possible without their support, outrageous generosity, and most of all, friendship. I moved to Kansas in 2017 specifically to pursue whitetails. I left behind everyone I knew including [...]

Amid Pandemic, 3 Million More Hunters Take To The Woods

Several times over the last 9 months I blogged that I thought COVID-19 would lead to an increased number of hunters, including new hunters and reactivated ones (people who used to hunt but gave it up for various reasons). I figured that most of these newbies would be deer hunters. The whitetail is America’s number 1 game animal, and the thought of hunting, killing and eating venison would appeal to many during the pandemic. Turns out I was right and then some. Some statistics: Michigan: More than 545,000 hunters bought hunting licenses through Nov. 11, nearly 10 percent more than at the same point in 2019, according to the state DNR. Pennsylvania: Game Commission reports a 5% increase in hunting [...]
