One summer the talk of Waupaca County, Wisconsin, was a ginormous buck on the prowl. The giant was feeding in beans and alfalfa on a farmer’s property just ½ mile from Paul Keller’s 80- acre hunting spot. Through observation and low-impact scouting, Paul confirmed that the buck was walking a timbered ridge on his property to get to a patch of standing corn, also on Paul’s land. Paul hung a few tree stands on and near the ridge, and one day in September he killed one of the top bow bucks of 2012—the massive 27-pointer grossed 244! The buck was walking a timbered ridge within ½-mile of the fields… A spot like that is one of the best for early-season bow [...]

I just talked with a couple of my outfitting friends up in Saskatchewan and they confirmed what I already knew. The Canada-US border is closed to non-essential travel through October and likely into next year. Therefore, no Americans will hunt deer anywhere in Canada in 2020. I am bummed because I was scheduled to hunt my favorite area and shoot another TV show near Green Lake, Saskatchewan the second week of November. I’ve hunted the second week up in the bush for more than 3 decades, and have killed some giants, including the 209-incher above, and the 173-inch buck below. With no Americans going up this fall and spending $5,000-plus apiece to hunt for a big deer, there will be a [...]

Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) advises hunters who plan to donate deer this season to check with their local meat processor for changes related to COVID-19. “The impact of COVID-19 on some of the larger commercial processing plants in locations across the country has had a trickle-down impact on many local butchers and meat markets,” said FHFH Executive Director Josh Wilson. “There are some meat processing locations that are completely booked with livestock processing until well into the new year – and as a result some have opted to pause the deer processing portion of their business until they are caught up. “With more people than usual depending on food assistance programs and ministries due to the pandemic, [...]

How To Shoot A Buck With Your Bow

Here’s your 6-step plan: Stay sharp: It’s tough to keep your edge for hours when you haven’t seen a buck for a while. But do it. The minute you drop your guard and start daydreaming a monster will pop up within 50 yards. You never want that. When a big deer surprises you, you tend to get rattled, make a foolish move and spook him. So concentrate as much as you can. Scan the woods and try to pick up the flash of antlers or hide as far out you as can. That way you’ll have time to calm your nerves, stand up, shift into position and plan your draw and shot. From USA Today: The youth deer hunting season in Kansas got off to a doozy of a start… Fourteen-year-old Paslie Werth…shot a once-in-a-lifetime deer on Sept. 6 — a 40-point, free-range whitetail buck tallying a gross green score of 282 6/8 inches — while rifle hunting on family property with her father, Kurt, in Kiowa County. When the rack is officially scored after the required 60-day drying period Paslie’s buck, which father Kurt believes could net in the high 260s, will be one of the top non-typical whitetails ever shot with a firearm in Kansas. The Sunflower State’s #1 gun buck is the 280 4/8” monster killed by Joseph Waters in Shawnee County in 1987. My friends at North American [...]
