I know you get a ton of pictures from hunters, but I wanted to send you this one as proof of what you preach. I shot this buck after a front passed through and it turned cold. Working a tip one time, Kentucky wildlife officers went to a guy’s house and arrested him on suspicion of illegally killing of 48 deer. 48! While there, the officers also discovered marijuana plants, indoor grow lights, a cloning system, 16 bags of processed weed, more than 100 pills in plastic bags, 19 firearms and some cash. A Conservation Officer said at the time, “As for those who do this, most of them don’t have jobs and the biggest percentage are also into drugs.” Why anybody would poach 48 deer is beyond me, but that's another story. The section entitled “Traveling Requirements for Firearms” in QDMA’s 2020 Whitetail Report caught my attention. Having hunted deer and other animals in 40 states over the years, I know first-hand that “case laws” vary from state to state, and even county to county. This can be confusing, and in a worst-case scenario can get you in one hell of a jam if you don’t know and follow the laws. 7 states* require rifles/shotguns/muzzleloaders to be cased (either hard or soft case) in a vehicle at all times, whether you hunting near home for the day, or driving through one state to get to another. A couple of years ago my home state of Virginia banned the use of estrus doe and other attractant scents that contain natural deer urine. This even though many experts believe the risk of spreading Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in a herd with urine-based scents is virtually zero. Last year, on top of that, Virginia restricted the use of minerals to attract deer, which has thrown a major monkey wrench in my scouting strategy. But laws are laws, so this summer and fall I’m going to try something different. Rather than refreshing the licks (some a decade old) on the farms I hunt with minerals, I’ll be using Active-Cam™ Scouting Scent from Wildlife Research Center.
