Jim emailed me about the video we produced on cleaning a rifle. He said he watched it, followed our steps to a tee, let the rifle sit awhile and then went to the range to sight-in again. "I have killed a lot of deer with this rifle over the years, but it never really shot all that great," he said. "Two and a half inches is about the best group I could ever get. But after cleaning the barrel like John advised in the video, the rifle now shoots just over an inch MOA." The Oscars are Sunday night. “Who cares?” you ask, and I agree. I only bring it up because we were honored recently with 3 Tellys, cable television’s version of the prestigious film awards. In the TV Programs category at the 36th Annual Telly Awards, BIG DEER TV won a much- coveted Silver for Entertainment for “A Dream Buck For Krista.” In this episode, cancer-survivor Krista Dick, a wonderful and inspiring young lady, and I persisted over 2 years and 4 hunts in South Carolina and finally got her buck, an old 5 1/2-year-old warrior. It was one of the most emotional and uplifting episodes I have ever produced, one of my all-time favorites. I gained a friend and hunting buddy for life. [...]

Best Rifles and Calibers For Deer Hunting

Caliber: I’ve shot whitetails, mule deer and a few blacktails with a dozen different cartridges over the years, and from those experiences I’ve drawn the following simple yet practical conclusion: Choose a rifle caliber that shoots a 130- to 165-grain bullet accurately out to 300 yards and you’ll be in great shape for deer anywhere in North America. Five time-tested standbys--.270, .308, .30-06, 7mm-08 and 7mm Rem. Mag.--fit that criteria and, all things considered, are my top choices for straight up mule deer hunting and whitetail hunting. Quick note about the .270: I have shot a bunch of bucks with this cartridge, and I prefer the added weight and anchoring power of the 150-grain bullet over the 130-grainer. Quick note [...]

Update: Kansas Roadkill Buck 182 7/8 Net

We first posted about this buck in October 2015. It was found dead on the side of the road in Leawood, KS. Initial speculation was the rack would score in the 190-200 range, with some estimates saying as high as 212 gross. Antler fanatic Cameron C. recently got to see and hold the rack, and he gives us the final details via a Facebook post: 211" total bone...200" typical frame...182 7/8" net typical...27 2/8" inside spread Wow what a buck, and what a shame it had to die that way.
