BIG DEER Moon & Rut Hunting Guide 2015

From Kansas to Virginia to Canada, 95 percent of adult does will come into estrous and be bred from roughly November 5-20, regardless of moon phase, or weather for that matter. That is the case every year. So take off anytime from Halloween though Thanksgiving, and you’ll hunt deer in some throes of the rut. And anytime you hunt rutting deer you have the potential to shoot a good buck. But I do believe that some days and weeks are better than others to take your hunt vacation according to the various phases of the “rutting moon” in late October and November. A lot of people are moon skeptics, but not me. There are a lot of variables to moon phase [...]

Big-Buck Dreams Come True In South Carolina

Let me introduce you to my new hunting buddy, 15-year-old Jordan Beri. Last Friday evening Jordan, who has spina bifida and is paralyzed from the chest down, shot this 212-pound, low-fence giant in SC. Jordan dropped the fully mature deer w/one shot. I have never been so proud. I was at least 10 times more excited than he was! Before our afternoon hunt, we held hands and Jordan led us in a little prayer. He’s been a preacher since age 4 and has traveled around the South preaching at revivals. His dad, Patrick, told me that often at these events other preachers come up to Jordan and say, “Boy, let’s pray that one day you’ll walk again.” To which Jordan replies, “You [...]

Oklahoma Big Buck: 227 6/8″

Gary Fears watched our BIG DEER TV episode shot in western Oklahoma and sent me this: Hey Mike, I shot this 227 6/8-inch bruiser in November 2010 not far from where you hunt in northwest Oklahoma. I watch your show and am glad you show just how good the deer hunting is here in Oklahoma. I took this buck the day before Thanksgiving 2010. We had a late rut that year and he was chasing a hot doe. He ran off a very respectable 10 point, but stayed back in some cedars for probably 15 minutes or more. He never got closer than 225 yards so I took the shot and put him down.  I didn’t realize he was as big as he [...]

More Trail Camera Bucks 2015

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 1st, 2015|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Shed Hunting|8 Comments

Hi Mike: Two weeks ago I set up a camera in a slightly different area and got this buck. He has some sort of an abscess, or growth, below his right cheek. I'm going to try and get him on the opener of bow, but we'll see how that plays out. I'm going to use my cameras to see if I can pinpoint his bedding area during Sept. As you know it's a delicate balancing act with a buck of this caliber. I believe him to be 5 now.--Anonymous Hey Mike: This is a buck we call “Legend.” We began chasing him after I found his shed lying in his bed in late January. I have never seen him on [...]

Bowhunt Big Deer: When To Crowd A Buck’s Bedding Area

2020-06-10T09:19:35-04:00August 28th, 2015|Big Deer TV, Bowhunting, Deer Hunting, Deer Management|1 Comment

In late summer whitetails are genetically programmed to set up their home ranges near nutritious food sources and with heavy bedding cover close by. This way bucks can pile on the pounds (up to 20 percent of their body weight now through September) while only moving short distances. Finding bucks now is all about zeroing in on the best food sources. The top four: alfalfa, soybeans, clover and corn. If you have any of these fields on your land, or if the crops are planted on neighboring properties, you will have bucks in your woods to hunt. It’s fairly easy to glass, locate and pattern bucks that come to feed in the alfalfa and beans fields. But setting up to [...]
