Zach and Ellie Atkins are our favorite hunting couple. Zach reported in with this great news: Well Mike, yesterday afternoon I got it done. 27 days it took and I finally got it done. Best early birthday present ever! This buck was my #1 hit lister. We named him “Scar” because he doesn’t have a right eye, the whole eye is missing. I got in the stand around 12:00 and this bad boy was out in the field dogging a doe about 100 yards away. He started working my way so I got everything ready to go. Then all of a sudden he started to turn the doe away from me. I thought, “Oh hell no!" Grabbed my bow, climbed [...]

Digital image One November Russ Van Zoeren hunted a public tract in Kansas for a week. For the first five days, the temperature was in the 70s, and the deer movement was predictably slow. But then one night, storms and a cold front crashed in. The mercury plummeted into the 30s, and a northwest wind shook the trees. Next morning at 8:15, a buck prowled out of the long, dense cedar thicket that Russ had been watching all week. The deer ripped a scrape and walked, grunting, beneath Russ’ stand. His arrow was true. At just under 200 pounds dressed, the animal was on the light side for a mature Kansas buck. But there was nothing light about [...]

You Shoot A Deer At Last Light, Should You Leave It Overnight?

Short answer is, no. I’ve had several bad experiences with bucks I’ve shot at last light and left overnight. If the meat didn't flat out spoil, it sure tasted funky. I won’t leave a buck out now if the temperature is 40 degrees or above. And 40 is marginal, I believe you need the night air to dip down into the low 30s or cooler to have any hope of salvaging good, tasty meat from a deer that has lain on the ground, blood and guts in, for 12 hours or more. This is the most agonizing dilemma that I hope you are not forced to deal with this season. But if you are, go back to your truck, relax [...]

Georgia Bowhunter Kills Massive Cryptorchid Buck

From GameandFishmag.com: Last season Georgia hunter Benny Overholt passed a good non-typical buck in velvet that he estimated to be five years old. Fast forward to 2021 when the same buck started showing up on trail cameras, and Overholt noticed there was something decidedly weird about it. He determined that the deer never shed its rack after last season, and remained in velvet the entire time. As a 6 ½-year-old, the buck was essentially sporting a double rack, and still completely in velvet. Overholt knew, if given the opportunity this season, he wouldn't be passing the shot again. Benny shot the massive cryptorchid buck on September 13 and noticed the deer’s testicles had shriveled up, solving the mystery of the [...]
