A report released last year by the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports documented a 4.9% increase in hunting license sales from 2019 to 2020. One of the few bright spots of COVID is that it produced a rekindled interest in deer hunting across the United States as people sought to get outside, do something new and try to harvest their own food. To continue monitoring the pandemic’s impact on hunting, the Council revisited this study in early 2022 to identify ongoing changes and emerging trends in hunters’ rates of license purchases. Working with survey experts Southwick Associates, the Council collected monthly resident and nonresident hunting license sales data from 46 state wildlife agencies to compare 2021 [...]

With all the crime and tragedy swirling in America right now--what causes young males do such violent and unspeakable things?--the results of this 2019 study are interesting and relevant.—M.H. Paul Niekamp, a Ball State economics professor, analyzed daily crime data with statistics from deer hunting seasons spanning 20 years and 21 states for his study, “Good Bang for the Buck: Effects of Rural Gun Use on Crime.” “The results of this paper provide strong evidence that enormous increases in recreational long gun prevalence are not associated with any increase in violent crime,” he said. “In the least populous areas, where long gun prevalence increased 530%, estimates suggest that male violent crime actually decreased.” Niekamp’s study provides the first estimates of [...]

When Leasing Hunting Land, Be Careful And Don’t Get Cheated

Many individuals and businesses advertise online and through social media about private lands to lease for deer hunting across the U.S. Though I cannot vouch for the game or habitat quality of any land to be leased (undoubtedly some of it is decent while other lands probably suck), I believe most of these people run a legit gig. But not all of them.  Case in point:   An Ohio man pleaded guilty to wire fraud for operating a scheme where he solicited payment in exchange for purported hunting leases he had no rights to sell. According to court documents, throughout 2019, Nathanal L. Knox, 30, of Ohio, operated a scheme where he placed online advertisements for hunting leases supposedly available [...]

On July 1, 2022, it will be legal to hunt on Sundays on public land In Virginia, per a bill signed this week by Gov. Glenn Youngkin. In Virginia, a ban on Sunday hunting has been in place in one form or another since 1643, when it was passed by the House of Burgesses. Several years ago, state legislators passed a law allowing hunting on Sunday on private lands in Virginia, but not on public. Starting with the 2022-23 fall seasons, people can also hunt on state WMAs and national forests anywhere in the Commonwealth. “This legislation encourages Virginians to take full advantage of the many outdoor opportunities our great Commonwealth has to offer,” said Youngkin in a statement. “This legislation [...]

On this Earth Day I refer you to a passage written a few years ago by two of America’s top deer biologists, Drs. Larry Marchinton and Karl Miller: In the United States roughly 3 million white-tailed deer are harvested each year… This translates to about 150 million pounds of meat. Add to this the amount of elk, turkey, squirrel, rabbit and other game as well as wild fruits, nuts, and vegetables that is consumed. To produce this amount of beef, chicken, or vegetable crops in addition to that which is already produced would be ecologically devastating. Acres and acres of wild places would have to be destroyed to accommodate this increased agricultural production. More wildlife habitat would have to be [...]
