From our friend Kclap in Virginia: Hello Mike, thought I'd pass along a few pics of a couple deer blinds we made out of old swing/play sets for kids. Start with the wooden frame of an old play set, similar to the picture below. The old sets we used were both headed to the landfill. You can often find free ones in local papers or on Craigslist. Add a few sheets of cheap plywood sides and roof with screws, match the paint to your hunting area and they're ready to go. The blinds are great for scent control and offer a steady shooting rest. Add a comfortable arm chair and you can sit and hunt all day. Good luck and safe [...]

Deer and Deer Hunting reports that a monstrous Ohio buck known as “Bosa” was hit and killed by a vehicle the last week of August 2016. Bosa, pushing 180 B&C, was watched, photographed and videoed by locals for several years. The big deer was named for former Ohio State University linebacker Joey Bosa, a first-round draft pick (3rd overall) of the San Diego Chargers in 2016. For some great photos and video of the Bosa buck alive, click here.

How to Shoot a September Whitetail Buck with Your Bow

For two years there was talk of a mysterious buck with massive drop tines roaming the part of Missouri where Kevin Jaegers’ father-in-law owns a farm. When trail-cam images of the 200-class freak started popping up—finally some hard evidence--Kevin got serious. He hung a tree stand on the farm last summer and vowed to hunt the monster hard in September. This was a departure for Kevin, who normally doesn't hunt that much in the early bow season. But he figured that if he was ever going to see Drops, the first days would be the best. After that, pressure in the area would likely turn the buck nocturnal. Opening day came, and the wind was wrong for Kevin’s stand. “I [...]

Buck Tail Deer Mount

Bruce saw our post on deer skull mounts and sent a cool one with a twist: Hi Mike: I thought I would send in a unique and innovative mount that we did for my son Quinn. He shot a button buck that actually won the "Big Buck Award" for our deer camp last season.  While he was disappointed he couldn't get a shot on several nice 8 pointers that he saw, he did come away with his first deer under his belt. I've gotten a lot of compliments on his design to show off his big buck! Plus, it looks great with the Big Deer hat you signed for him.--Bruce Bennett Looks great Quinn! First buck, awesome buddy, here’s to many [...]

Bow Season: Grant Woods’ Hidey-Hole Fall Food Plots

If your archery deer season opens October 1 try this. Dr. Grant Woods, one of the top whitetail experts in America, is a believer in tiny green food plots, which he calls “hidey holes.” “A hidey-hole is a small patch of green forage that you develop and hide in the woods, where deer can grab several mouthfuls of food before they move on to a larger green field or acorn flat." Locate a little open spot in a high-traffic area: optimally along a trail that deer are using regularly right now in the evening. Then go to work. "I simply use a leaf blower to clear a spot about 20 feet x 20 feet where I can see sunlight hitting [...]
