Clinton’s Dismissive Anti-Hunting Remarks Offend All Sportsmen

Hillary Clinton was interrupted by a few animal rights protesters at a rally in Las Vegas last week. Secret Service agents rushed to her aid and the incident was diffused. Clinton then joked that the kooky activists must have been there to protest Donald Trump. “Trump and his kids have killed a lot of animals,” she said. “Thank you for making that point.” Hillary proceeded to screech that grating laugh, and the fawning crowd cheered wildly. Well, I did not cheer when I heard those remarks on the radio. In 16 words, Hillary unabashedly trashed America’s 13 million hunters. Not only were the remarks offensive and disrespectful to all sportsmen, in the literal sense “Trump and his kids” have shot [...]

The Hunting Mentality: “Keep Your Head in the Game”

Got this from Bud awhile back: Mike, watch your show all the time. My son and I hunted together in Kentucky last year. One day I sat in a blind and saw deer from dawn until 10:30. I let 16 smaller bucks go, waiting for Mr. Big. I didn’t see another deer for 4 hours. All I thought about was what you said in one of your shows: “Keep your head in the game you never know when he will step out…” Well, my buck came out at 2:45 in the afternoon, and I dropped him at 217 yards with a .30-06 shooting a 180-grain. I've been hunting since I was 16; I'm 69 and he's my best deer. Just [...]

BIG DEER TV 2016 Episode 5: Kentucky’s Coal-Country Elk

Did you know that Kentucky has the largest herd of wild elk east of the Mississippi River? In 1997, seven elk were shipped from Kansas to the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. Over the next several years some 1,550 more wapiti were transported from various Western states into the Kentucky mountains. The animals thrived in the hilly, rugged reclaimed strip mine habitat. Today Kentucky’s elk herd is estimated at a strong and healthy 10,000 animals. It is one of America’s top wildlife restoration stories, and we highlight and celebrate that success on tonight’s episode. The conservation story is weaved amid a great hunt that took place last October. My friend and Sportsman Channel colleague, Graig Hale, somehow beat astronomical odds and [...]

Danny updates us on the doe that is afflicted with the huge cutaneous fibroma and more: Here’s a recent pic of Old Wart Face (unfortunately that’s what we named her). Both she and her babies seem to be doing just fine. I also have a small buck with several small warts over his body. The split brow tine buck is now a main frame 9 plus the split brow. It looks like he has added tine length, but no real changes to the brow tines. Would love to see what he looks like in 2017, but I don’t think I could pass if the opportunity presents itself.  He’s approaching stud level for our area. Still no pics of “The Freak” (above image [...]

Just in time for the weekend we post this guest blog from our friend Matt “Flatlander” Cheever who is not only a top-notch hunter but also a master griller of game meat: Hey venison lovers, it is midway through the grilling season and the 2016 deer season is quickly approaching. You probably have some deer meat left in the freezer that you need to use up before you restock. Here’s how to grill a feast with it. Everyone thinks the magic cure for making game meat tender and tasty is a secret marinade or recipe, but nothing could be further from the truth. Field care and proper butchering and handling of the meat in the field are the #1 key. Just [...]
