Big-Buck Dreams Come True In South Carolina

Let me introduce you to my new hunting buddy, 15-year-old Jordan Beri. Last Friday evening Jordan, who has spina bifida and is paralyzed from the chest down, shot this 212-pound, low-fence giant in SC. Jordan dropped the fully mature deer w/one shot. I have never been so proud. I was at least 10 times more excited than he was! Before our afternoon hunt, we held hands and Jordan led us in a little prayer. He’s been a preacher since age 4 and has traveled around the South preaching at revivals. His dad, Patrick, told me that often at these events other preachers come up to Jordan and say, “Boy, let’s pray that one day you’ll walk again.” To which Jordan replies, “You [...]

First Big Bucks 2015: Kentucky, Kansas 200-Inch!

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 15th, 2015|BigDeer|2 Comments

I don’t have any details on either of these monsters, just what I have seen on Facebook or Twitter. Top photo is a 200-inch full-velvet bow giant from Kentucky. Bottom buck is reportedly from Kansas; I have seen some snide comments on social media that the second deer might be a pen deer, but who knows, anytime somebody kills a really big buck jealous people say that. I do hope it’s wild and legit. Anyhow, the sight of these racks ought to get ya that much more fired up!

Oklahoma Big Buck: 227 6/8″

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 14th, 2015|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV|1 Comment

Gary Fears watched our BIG DEER TV episode shot in western Oklahoma and sent me this: Hey Mike, I shot this 227 6/8-inch bruiser in November 2010 not far from where you hunt in northwest Oklahoma. I watch your show and am glad you show just how good the deer hunting is here in Oklahoma. I took this buck the day before Thanksgiving 2010. We had a late rut that year and he was chasing a hot doe. He ran off a very respectable 10 point, but stayed back in some cedars for probably 15 minutes or more. He never got closer than 225 yards so I took the shot and put him down.  I didn’t realize he was as big as he [...]

Deer Science: How A Big Buck Reacts

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 10th, 2015|BigDeer|2 Comments

Dr. Grant Woods, one of the top deer biologists in the world, told me one time: “Whitetail bucks react incredibly quickly to either a positive or a negative stimulus. A lot of hunters fail to take that into account quickly enough. For example, if a buck sees or hears you in a tree stand near a food plot, he will learn to avoid that spot very fast. He will still go to the plot (positive stimulus) but he will circle your stand (negative stimulus) so that you might never know he was there. You might sit there all afternoon, not see any deer and wonder what is wrong. Hunters need to take into consideration how fast mature bucks react and adjust [...]

200” Buck Walking in Mexico

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 9th, 2015|BigDeer|7 Comments

Dean posted this photo on Facebook about 2 absolute giants that are traveling together right now on El Puerto Ranch in Neuvo Leon, Mexico: Two complete STUDS!!! One on the left pushing 200" and probably 30-34" wide. The one on the right well in the 180s and dwarfed by "Muy Ancho" on the left! I have always wanted to hunt whitetails in Mexico, but I have not yet gotten up the nerve to head south of the border near Laredo. I have law enforcement friends in this region, and they me this is one of the worst crime areas on the border. As such, there are less Americans traveling down to those ranches these days, and more and more bucks are living longer, to full maturity, and growing [...]
