One November morning in Kansas, the rut was rocking when Greg Brownlee saw a doe walk out of a tree line and proceed to cross a CRP field. She stopped and looked back. "Oh boy, this is it," he thought. Greg’s heart dropped as he glassed a young buck with one antler come out the trees toward the doe. Then he caught more movement—an enormous rack overtook the little buck and made for the doe! The hunter started to get excited, but quickly took 5 deep breaths to calm down. "If I think about it too much, I could screw this thing up," he thought. The giant started toward the doe, but when he got about 150 yards out from [...]

Alberta 2018: Young Lady Shoots 238 2/8” Giant Buck!

This is the first picture I saw months ago of a mystery buck/rack that was supposedly shot last November by a female hunter in the Peace River area of Alberta. You know how enthralled and obsessed I am by dark, thick Canadian racks, especially one that I know will go 200-plus, so I investigated. It took some digging but I finally caught up with @tiffcheryl on Instagram. “That’s my buck in case you’re wondering!” she posted me back. All the initial info I had seen proved true. The giant was indeed shot by a lady in Alberta last November 12. Then I was able to study the official score sheet and see just how massive this buck is! 14 points [...]

Ohio: 2018 Deer Harvest Down, But Big Buck Kill Up

Hunters checked 172,040 whitetails deer during Ohio’s 2018-2019 season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). That’s down from last year, when 186,247 deer were checked. Some of the decrease can be attributed to poor weather throughout the fall of 2018. While the overall harvest was down, the number of big bucks killed with a bow was impressive. In the photo: Gary Bendele shot this giant (170 net Booner) with his bow on November 8, 2018 in Fayette County. Ethan  Featheroff’s monster non-typical, shot last October, grossed 220! Facts about deer hunting in Ohio: Regulations set by ODNR over the past four seasons have been designed to allow for moderate herd growth throughout most of the state; herd [...]

Why You Should Always Tape The Muzzle of Your Hunting Rifle

This is me with a great buck I shot out in Wyoming years ago. Minutes earlier I didn’t have that nice smile on my face. I was dazed, confused and damn lucky I hadn’t blown myself up. It started when I shot a foot over the buck at a tad under 200 yards with solid shooting sticks. Even when I miss a deer, it’s not by that much. The deer bolted at the bang and ran straight toward me! I bolted another 130-grainer, fired, missed again. The buck kept churning closer and closer, and I dropped him at 60 steps. Like I said, damn lucky. As I sat muttering and wondering what had gone wrong, I happened to look down [...]

Sarah Van Pietersom hunted the opener of the 2018 Wisconsin gun deer season. “We went out about 2:30 and didn’t see much initially," the Genesee resident told the Journal Sentinel. "Around 4 I saw what I thought was a buck. I pulled out my binoculars to get a closer look and thought to myself it was a decent buck. He dropped with one shot. I didn’t realize at that point it was this big buck."  Giant! The buck was estimated to be around 6 years old, and he looks it in the picture. Sarah said she became interested in hunting by sitting with her fiancé while he hunted when they started dating six years ago. Four years ago, she took a hunter safety course and started hunting on [...]
