Say you’re sighting-in your hunting rifle, firing 3-shot groups from the bench. It's going well. Your shots are grouping an inch or less. You shoot on, and every now and then a bullet strikes the target a couple inches to the left or right (or high or low) of your main point of impact. You start to get frustrated and think about moving the scope--Don't! As long as 2 bullet holes stay clustered within an inch, you’re in good shape. Any “flyers” were likely due to human error—you've shot too much and flinched a bit or maybe jerked the trigger and pulled the errant shot offline. The worst thing you can do is worry about one bad shot and start [...]

Right now is the perfect time to grab your hunting rifles and head to the shooting range. The joint will be empty this time of year, especially on weekdays. You can test different brands of ammo, sight-in a new scope or just practice with your old rigs without a crowd of shooters breathing down your neck for bench time like they would come September on the brink of another hunting season. The more you fine-tune your rifles and shoot in the off-season, the better your chances of a one-shot game kill this fall. Here are 8 tips that will get you on zero and ready extra-early. Finally, some good news from my home state. In a statement the NRA said: Thanks to Second Amendment supporters around the Commonwealth ceaselessly voicing their opposition to a sweeping gun ban, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-5 to reject House Bill 961 on February 17th. Bloomberg’s House majority in the General Assembly is not going to deliver their most coveted agenda item to their billionaire master. House Bill 961 was a comprehensive ban on many commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms, suppressors, and standard capacity magazines. The original bill sought to impose a licensing and registration scheme for citizens who wish to keep affected firearms they lawfully owned prior to the ban, with felony penalties for noncompliance. It also broadly banned any part that could [...]

There are 2 reasons to visit South Texas in January: the weather is wonderful, and there are plenty of big deer running around. On most ranches in Texas, those bucks are classified as either “trophy” or “management” deer. Trophies are bucks with 10 points or better that have the potential to grow 150-class racks and larger, up to 170-plus. The larger the racks, the more expensive they are to hunt. Texas ranchers and deer managers consider management bucks to be: 1) 4-year-old and older deer with limited antler potential; and 2) bucks with 9 points or less that gross score less than 140 inches. These are the type of bucks that I can afford to hunt (cost of a management [...]

One of our most popular segments on Big Deer TV is “American Deer Hunter,” in which we interview hunters from across the country about the dream bucks they shot. Their stories are genuine, fascinating and full of lessons that can help you become a better hunter. Last fall we caught up Wayne Mills and filmed the story of the drop-tine giant he shot years back. It will appear on a new episode of my show in summer 2020. Wayne Mills had hunted his lease in Culpeper County, Virginia three days a week since the opening of archery season in October. In late summer and early fall, he had gotten trail camera shots of two really nice bucks, so he had [...]
