Best & Worst States for Gun Owners

2020-06-10T09:23:34-04:00June 25th, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Hunting News|1 Comment

Guns & Ammo has built a list of the best (and worst) places to be a gun shooter/hunter. They based their criteria on state firearms laws, concealed carry, etc. As you might expect New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and California ranked dead last. Best gun states were Arizona, Alaska, Utah, Kentucky and Vermont (a mild surprise to me). My native Virginia ranked a disappointing 24, though I do not feel my rights as a gun owner have been squeezed in recent years, even though our state is becoming more liberal. Click here to read the list and see where your state ranks.

Buck Science: How Many Big Deer Do You See?

2020-06-10T09:23:34-04:00June 18th, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management, Deer Science|7 Comments

I’ve got a segment on my TV show called “Buck Science” where I talk about some aspect of the deer behavior in the area I’m hunting each week. Let’s make it a weekly segment here on the blog as well, since the more we know and learn about mature bucks, the better we hunt. I dug this first one out of my research files. Tennessee deer researcher Bryan Kinkel says: Reviewing the many trail-camera/observation data sets I have gotten from serious deer hunters and land managers, I have come to the conclusion that it's common for hunters to see 90% of the yearling bucks that regularly use their property. That sighting percentage declines to about 70% for 2 1/2-year-old bucks [...]

PETA Drones to Watch Hunters?

2020-06-10T09:23:34-04:00June 17th, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Hunting|112 Comments

PETA claims it will soon have “some impressive new weapons at its disposal to combat those who gun down deer… The group is shopping for one or more drone aircraft with which to monitor those who are out in the woods with death on their minds.” This might make you mad if it were not so laughable. What a ridiculously impractical idea! How could they possibly fly their “one or more” little drones around and monitor 12 million deer hunters as we hit the woods from coast to coast to shoot a buck this fall? One of the “drones” PETA claims it is looking at is actually a small, remote-controlled copter that costs around $13,000, plus video camera. Plus, you need [...]

California: New Gun Laws Will Kill Hunting

2020-06-10T09:23:35-04:00June 3rd, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Hunting News|1,051 Comments

For many reasons I am glad I don’t live in Cali: Nancy Pelosi, earthquakes, exorbitant taxes… And, it’s the most hunter-unfriendly state. If the greenie-weenies and state politicians get their way, there will be no hunting of any kind left in CA, I mean none. Sadly, there are not enough resident hunters to fend off the anti-hunters and anti-gunners. Only 281,000 hunters purchased licenses in CA last year (182,000 deer licenses), a pittance for a huge state with 38 million people. For comparison, Pennsylvania, a state with a population of 12 million, sold about 1 million licenses. Of the 12 gun laws advanced by state lawmakers last week, I predict 2 in particular will make honest, law-abiding hunters, who are [...]

If a Doctor Asks About Your Guns…

2020-06-10T09:23:36-04:00May 21st, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Hunting|11 Comments

According to this blog, a Fox News producer recently changed doctors, and the questionnaire the person  filled out at the new medical office asked: “Are you concerned about unsecured weapons in the home?” Strange and incredibly intrusive question, but I had heard this was going to happen with Obamacare. I did not know it was already happening. Fox’s Judge Andrew Napolitano (everybody likes that guy, including me) explained that the question about firearms comes from a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama. Napolitano went on to say that the question is "exceptionally troublesome," but noted that Congress approved of the gun question when it passed Obamacare. "Most people will think they have to answer,” the Judge said. “They don't [...]
