Right now we're in the middle of a 3-week road trip filming for Season 12 of Big Deer TV on Sportsman Channel. I wanted to share a few photos with this update: I kicked things off in northwestern Oklahoma by shooting this beautiful 10-pointer (4.5 years old) with thick antler bases. He was pushing does all over the place and I finally stopped him with a loud eck and killed him with one 150-grain Hornady SST bullet. Rifle is the great new CZ model 600, mine in old-school .30-06, topped with the great Trijicon Huron 3X-9X by 40mm scope.             Next up was my friend John Trull of Trijicon, who for several days hunted a [...]

Hunt A Whitetail Buck’s Bedding Area

Sometimes the only way to fool a gnarly old buck is to get bold and hunt near his bedroom. Risky, but it can be done. First, find which patch of cover a big deer favors. Spend a few sunrises glassing field edges, fencerows, brushy ditches, and the like. Try to spot Mr. Big slipping home after a late night on the woods. Consult an aerial photograph and draw on your past experiences to predict where the buck is holing up. One day around lunchtime go in from downwind and hang a stand on a ridge flat, along a trail, or near a funnel 100 to 150 yards downwind of the cover where you think he’s bedding. Some days. your target [...]

Deer Rifles: Sight-In, Wind Drift, Downhill Shots

Should I sight-in my deer rifle with 3 shots groups or 5 shots like they did in the old days? Sight in with 2 or 3 shot groups. If you shoot 5, the barrel will heat up and the bullets’ point of impact might keep changing. You’ll fiddle with your scope settings too much and mess things up. BTW, zero your rifle and scope so that bullets group about 1½ inches high above a target’s bulls-eye. Now you have a rig with a 200-yard zero, so hold spot on a buck. I’d like to shoot my rifle more, but I’m squeezed for time and there’s no range near my house. What can I do? Set several archery deer targets or [...]

How To Avoid Buck Fever

Here’s an 8-step plan for staying cool and collected, and making all the right moves when a big buck is close. Set up smartly. Play it smart before you lay eyes on a big deer. Do you normally hang a tree stand 18 to 20 feet high? Well, move it on up to 22 feet when archery hunting. A little extra elevation lets you get away with a lot more movement (which we will discuss later) when a buck approaches. Also, if you shoot right-handed, angle a perch on a tree so that your left shoulder points toward a spot where you expect to see deer (vice versa for southpaws). If a buck shows there, you can stand up and [...]
