With all the crime and tragedy swirling in America right now--what causes young males do such violent and unspeakable things?--the results of this 2019 study are interesting and relevant.—M.H. Paul Niekamp, a Ball State economics professor, analyzed daily crime data with statistics from deer hunting seasons spanning 20 years and 21 states for his study, “Good Bang for the Buck: Effects of Rural Gun Use on Crime.” “The results of this paper provide strong evidence that enormous increases in recreational long gun prevalence are not associated with any increase in violent crime,” he said. “In the least populous areas, where long gun prevalence increased 530%, estimates suggest that male violent crime actually decreased.” Niekamp’s study provides the first estimates of [...]

How Drought Conditions Affect Deer

I just returned from shooting an Axis deer TV show in the western Hill Country of Texas. During my hunt, daytimes temperatures ranged from 95 to 100 degrees. I was struck not only by the heat, but the incredibly dry and brown country. It hadn't rained measurably in months, and the habitat showed. The 2 bucks we shot were beautiful animals (mine pictured below, shot near a waterhole), but noticeably smaller and less body heavy than they would have been in a year of normal precipitation. It got me to thinking about how a drought affects deer. As you can see by the map, much of the western half of the country is experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions, and [...]

New Science: What Kills Most Deer Fawns?

Most every scientific study conducted over the past 30 years has documented predation, largely by coyotes, as the leading cause of whitetail fawn mortality. This time of year, on websites and social media, you see unsettling images of coyotes prancing by trail cameras with spotted fawns dangling out their jaws. Outdoor television has aired countless shows focused on killing coyotes to save deer. I once filmed an episode of Big Deer TV on predators, the theme of which was to thin coyotes on your land to save a few fawns and help your deer herd. We’ve been conditioned to hate on the coyote. But wait a sec… “Predation may have less of an impact than we think,” writes Justin Dion in [...]

Big Deer Hunt Report: 5 Lessons From Last Deer Season

I’ve been hunting whitetails for more than 40 years, and nothing a mature buck does surprises me anymore. Nothing. I learn new things every season, and so should you. Here are 5 takeaways from the 2021 season. Stop Complaining and Hunt The Heat During early bow and black-powder seasons in Virginia last October, temperatures hovered in the 70s and even 80s some days. In mid-November, I traveled to north-central Saskatchewan, where average temps should be in the teens and low 20s that time of year. Afternoons in the bush were a balmy 50 degrees. One sunny day in Oklahoma in late November, it was a record 88 degrees! Long story short, I hunted hard for 2 months in all these [...]
