The .30-06 Springfield, developed by the U.S. military in 1906, has become one of the top hunting cartridges of all-time. For decades it has ranked as one of the most popular deer hunting rounds in America based on ammo sales (along with the .30-30 and .270). Every store in America that sells ammunition, from the Cabela’s in Maine to a mom-and-pop hardware in the remote Heartland, will carry at least a few boxes of 150-grain loads, the most common .30-06 round for whitetails. No matter where you live and hunt, you’ll find ’06 deer rounds and bullets at the ready. By design, the distance from primer to the cartridge’s front edge (right at 2 inches) is shortened to ensure proper seating of a long, high ballistic-coefficient bullet in a short-action bolt magazine. By far the most popular load for the 6.5 PRC is Hornady’s Precision Hunter with 143-grain ELD-X bullet, though more PRC loads are coming to market as the [...]

I’ve been hunting whitetails for 40 years, and nothing a mature buck does surprises me anymore. I learn new things about big deer every season, and so should you. Here are 4 things I learned from last season; use them to kill a giant this fall. Hunt Later in the Pre-Rut   The first week of November last season in Virginia, I had 4 good bowhunters in camp to film an episode of Big Deer TV. On the second morning, I caught a fleeting glimpse of a 170-inch buck we had on cam, but other than that the best buck we saw in 6 days was a 3-year-old that might go 120. Not an arrow was fired. So much for getting [...]
