Depending on which expert you listened to this morning, this virus will either be the end of the world as we know it or, like the flu, it will begin to diminish in a couple months, and life as we know it will get back to some sense of normalcy. I heard one doctor say on the radio that 700,000 to 1 million Americans could die (there have been at least 88 deaths in the U.S. as of March 16) if covid-19 is not contained and lingers deep into the year. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the virus is going to get worse before it gets better. But he went on [...]

Finally, some good news from my home state. In a statement the NRA said: Thanks to Second Amendment supporters around the Commonwealth ceaselessly voicing their opposition to a sweeping gun ban, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-5 to reject House Bill 961 on February 17th. Bloomberg’s House majority in the General Assembly is not going to deliver their most coveted agenda item to their billionaire master. House Bill 961 was a comprehensive ban on many commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms, suppressors, and standard capacity magazines. The original bill sought to impose a licensing and registration scheme for citizens who wish to keep affected firearms they lawfully owned prior to the ban, with felony penalties for noncompliance. It also broadly banned any part that could [...]

How Many Bucks Do Hunters Harvest In North America?

2020-06-10T09:14:51-04:00February 11th, 2020|Big Deer TV, Deer Hunting, Deer Management, Hunting News, whitetail deer|Comments Off on How Many Bucks Do Hunters Harvest In North America?

The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has released its 12th annual Whitetail Report, a comprehensive update on the status of white-tailed deer including harvest trends through the 2018-19 season, the most recent hunting season with complete deer harvest data available from most whitetail states and Canadian provinces. In 2018-19, the total national buck harvest was 2,908,155. For comparison, the modern record buck harvest of 3.1 million was set in 1999. The big news is that across the U.S. and Canada in 2018-19, the percentage of yearling bucks (1½ years old) in the total antlered buck harvest fell to 30%, the lowest ever recorded. “The fact that less than 1 in 3 antlered bucks shot today is 1½ years old is amazing,” [...]

Wisconsin Deer Stands Vandalized By Anti-Hunting Lunatics

2020-06-10T09:14:52-04:00October 28th, 2019|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Hunting News|2 Comments

Multiple deer stands in Wisconsin’s Dunn County have been vandalized in recent weeks, tipped over and spray painted with messages like “Hunt the Hunters” and “All hunters are bastards.” “A.L.F." and the logo for the radical anti-hunting group Animal Liberation Front has appeared on some stands. The Animal Liberation Front told Fox News in a statement: "The North American Animal Liberation Press Office was very pleased to hear about the destruction of multiple hunting stands in Dunn County. It is an absurd idea that there is sport in lying in wait for an unsuspecting animal to stroll by and then blowing it away with a high-powered weapon. People who do this sort of thing are despicable and need to be [...]

Arkansas Hunter Killed By Deer He Shot

2020-06-10T09:14:52-04:00October 24th, 2019|Big Deer TV, Deer Hunting, Hunting News, whitetail deer|9 Comments

I have blogged several times over the years that a “dead deer can kill you,” so be careful when you walk up on a buck you just shot. Every time I do, some tough guys send me snide comments of how ridiculous that sounds, and what a wuss I must be. Really? From Ky3.com: “I’ve worked for the Game and Fish Commission for 20 years, and it’s one of the stranger things that’s happened," said Keith Stephens, the Chief of Communications with the agency. Officials said 66-year-old Thomas Alexander shot a buck with his muzzleloader while hunting near Yellville (Marion County). When he walked up to the buck, it attacked. “It got back up, and he had several puncture [...]
