I’ve been hunting whitetails for more than 40 years, and nothing a mature buck does surprises me anymore. Nothing. I learn new things every season, and so should you. Here are 5 takeaways from the 2021 season. Stop Complaining and Hunt The Heat During early bow and black-powder seasons in Virginia last October, temperatures hovered in the 70s and even 80s some days. In mid-November, I traveled to north-central Saskatchewan, where average temps should be in the teens and low 20s that time of year. Afternoons in the bush were a balmy 50 degrees. Hunting big deer up in Saskatchewan one time, I met a guy, let’s call him Mark, from Maryland. “Heard you got your buck,” I said, “Congrats.” “Yeah, a small one,” Mark replied. “I couldn’t take it anymore. I’d sat in that blind for 3 straight days, 9 hours a day. I was going crazy. I don’t like that kind of hunting. I said what the hell and shot this buck, just to shoot something." Most of the trees that bucks rubbed last October and November are still whitish scars on the trees, and easy to spot in the spring woods. Look especially close for “signpost” rubs--large, scarred trees that mark some section of a mature buck’s core living area. Missouri whitetail scientist Grant Woods says that while mature bucks blaze the rubs on thick trees during the lead up to the fall rut, many deer interact with them year-round. “Big rubs act as communal pheromone wicks and are located in areas with high deer traffic,” he says. Bucks and does can easily see the rubs and sometimes veer over for a sniff. Many signpost rubs are rubbed again and again by rutting bucks each [...]

The Sportsmen’s Alliance reports that “the hits keep coming in Rhode Island when it comes to hunting and firearms.” The Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee is considering legislation requiring a state or federal background check to purchase ammunition or reloading components. While the National Instant Criminal Background Check System has “instant” in its name, it can take up to three days to complete. As a result of House Bill 6616, online or mail orders for ammunition would not be possible. “This proposal would even ban a friend or family member from borrowing ammunition during a hunting trip, unless the recipient passed a background check,” said Dillon Barto, manager of state services at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “This is more bad policy [...]
