The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has released its 12th annual Whitetail Report, a comprehensive update on the status of white-tailed deer including harvest trends through the 2018-19 season, the most recent hunting season with complete deer harvest data available from most whitetail states and Canadian provinces. In 2018-19, the total national buck harvest was 2,908,155. For comparison, the modern record buck harvest of 3.1 million was set in 1999. The big news is that across the U.S. and Canada in 2018-19, the percentage of yearling bucks (1½ years old) in the total antlered buck harvest fell to 30%, the lowest ever recorded. “The fact that less than 1 in 3 antlered bucks shot today is 1½ years old is amazing,” [...]

From North American Whitetail: “I didn’t get a picture of that deer until the beginning of November, but when I saw him, I knew he was a good one even if I didn’t really know how good,” (Troy Bryant) said. “I got my second set of pictures on Nov. 18. Once again, I knew he was a good deer from those photos, but I still didn’t know he was a 200-inch kind of deer.” On opening day of Oklahoma’s 2019 deer gun season, Troy saw and shot the beast. The Harper County buck had 11 points, 25-inch-plus beams and scored 197 7/8 inches gross 190 6/8 net, ranking it as one of the top-five all-time typicals in Oklahoma. Read the [...]

Review: Cabela’s Axis Hunting Boot

I have long been a fan of Cabela’s hunting boots, for the money they are hard to beat. I wore the 8-inch Axis boot last deer season, for some 60-plus days, and it might be the best one yet. Comfortable the first time I put them on, no break-in time needed. Lightweight enough (2.7 pounds pair) and substantial soles that permit smooth and sure-footed stalking, and great ankle support. This is a great boot for both deer and elk hunting. The boot uppers are built of nubuck leather with 600-denier nylon. They feature waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX moisture-wicking linings to keep your feet dry and comfortable, and 400 grams Thinsulate insulation. I have found that 400 grams insulation is about perfect [...]

Trijicon, the official riflescope partner of BIG DEER TV, introduces the Huron scope specifically designed for the North American deer hunter. This is a world-class optic, top-quality glass and a rugged aluminum construction. Like all Trijicon optics used by the U.S. military and law enforcement, the Huron hunting scope undergoes extensive testing: temperature shock tests from -20 degrees F to 140 degrees F; every model is subjected to 5,000 consecutive rounds to confirm no reticle shift; and immersion tested, every riflescope is dry-nitrogen filled to eliminate internal fogging. Whether you hunt thick eastern brush or more open fields and plains in the Midwest or West, there is a variable-power scope option for you: 3-9 by 40mm, 3-12x40mm and 2.5-10 by [...]
