Year of the Drop-Tine Buck?

Steve sent this picture with the message: Mike, I know how you like drop tines… A friend of Steve’s killed the farmland deer in Michigan, northern Macomb County, about 20 years ago. Could it be an omen that the dream buck shows up here on Big Deer after all these years? The obsession to shoot a drop took me years ago, decades ago, though I am not sure when or even why. It is not because I went out one day and saw a dropper skulking through the woods and thought: That is the most awesome thing I have ever seen; I won’t be complete until I shoot one. No, after many years of serious whitetail hunting in 30 states [...]

Today’s post from blogger Jon, who hunts up in Minnesota/Wisconsin: Mike: I have any update from a post last year. I sent you the velvet picture of Titanic last August, and we had a lot of people guess at the score. Well, in early November 2012 I had a great encounter with this buck. I was sitting a cut corn field with a buck decoy out when the bruiser came in chasing does at last light. I didn’t know it was Titanic, but I knew it was one of the 3 big shooters we had on camera. He locked up at 35 yards, but was facing directly at me, staring at the decoy. I waited at full draw for what [...]

Georgia’s Biggest Deer: Padgett Buck 245 4/8!

2020-06-10T09:23:34-04:00June 14th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|108 Comments

Here’s another one from the Big Deer archives: I was filming a hunt in November 2008 down in Georgia. One day at lunchtime the guy who had killed the highest-scoring buck ever in the Peach State agreed to meet me on the side of a red dirt road and tell me how he did it. Billy Joe Padgett roared up in his pickup, the monster mount riding shotgun. “Let’s make this quick,” Billy Joe said, “I gotta get back on my deer stand.” Telfair County, November 1998, the day before Thanksgiving. Billy Joe’s dad was hunting his favorite stand on a lease and heard some grunting, but he couldn’t see the buck for a shot. The elder Padgett decided to [...]

Illinois Giant Bow Buck: 211 4/8!

2020-06-10T09:23:35-04:00June 11th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Bowhunting|450 Comments

It will be a few months till deer season and the new big-buck stories start rolling in. Until then, enjoy these giants from the Big Deer archives.--MH Mike: October 27, 2007 my dad, a friend and I hunted until 8:15 am. We all had plans for the day so we ended early. I decided to walk around the perimeter of my 47 acres just to see if anything was around. I have an old Christmas tree farm in Illinois, about 45 minutes from St. Louis. I had walked about 300 yards when I saw this massive rack lying under a pine tree. I kept walking 3 feet past the buck and, nocked an arrow, slowly walked 3 steps backwards and drew. As [...]

100-Year-Old “Trail Camera” Picture!

Jay Graber saw our recent post and picture of “Does Flying Around” and sent this. Fascinating! Mike: That picture is from the book Hunting Wildlife with Camera and Flashlight by George Shiras, a pioneer in nighttime wildlife photography. Peter White, his son-in-law, had a summer home on Whitefish Lake in the UP where some of the photos were taken. Early 1900s. My great-grandparents were the caretakers of that camp. My grandmother's (Ingrid Rundquist) cat was caught in a few of the pictures too and are in the book. Pretty cool, huh? Funny, after all of these years that I've had these books (volumes I and II) with the rich family history, I never tied the century gap together with today's [...]
