South Carolina: Krista’s 200-Pound Buck!

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 27th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV, BigDeer|6 Comments

Still August and we have our first big deer on the ground! My hunting buddy Krista, who stared leukemia in the face and beat it, shot this bruiser the other night. When I saw him stroll out into the food plot in the fading light, I knew he was at least 5 years old. The guy who manages the plantation where we hunted has seen this buck for a few years, and figures he’s 6 or 7. Last year the deer’s rack had the same strong left side, and a lesser 4-point right side. This year his right side was just a huge spike, with a weird 3-inch kicker at the antler base. Injured or was that right side going [...]

Legendary James Jordan Buck

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 14th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|5 Comments

When you walk into the Cabela’s store in Green Bay, Wisconsin, you see this full-body mount of the Jordan buck, which was shot 99 years ago this fall. The story of this deer is fascinating: One day in 1914 near Danbury, Wisconsin, James Jordan followed some huge deer tracks in the snow. A train roared by and its grind and whistle startled a group of deer, including a monster buck. James threw up his rifle and cracked off a few shots. His last bullet felled the giant. Jim took the 400-pound buck to a local taxidermist. Little did he know he would not see his trophy again for 50 years. The taxidermist moved away and took the rack with him. [...]

South Dakota Sioux Falls Buck: Alive at 11.5!

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 8th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Shed Hunting|3 Comments

In October 2008 I first blogged about a giant whitetail (12x14 with 240” of rack) that was living in the city limits of East Sioux Falls. Somebody posted a you tube video of him (I don’t see it online now) and it caused mild hysteria amongst hunters and non-hunters alike. At the time people figured the buck was the walking state record. For the last 5-plus years I’ve tracked this amazing deer with the help of Kelly, a hard-core hunter and shedder in the area. Kelly wrote me awhile back with this update: Mike, I'm running out of room! You should remember the buck mounted on the wall, that’s “you-tube" from east of Sioux Falls. Last year, just before scheduled shedding [...]

Colorado: Man Applies for BB Gun Permit, Is Targeted By Police

2020-06-10T09:23:23-04:00July 26th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Hunting News|Comments Off on Colorado: Man Applies for BB Gun Permit, Is Targeted By Police

I am posting this press release pretty much in its entirety because 1) it is so ridiculous; and 2) it is so downright scary. What is going on in Colorado and our country? Discharging a BB gun in the city limits of Grand Junction, Colorado is illegal. In order to try to rid his area of an invasive species, the Eurasian Dove, which Colorado allows to be hunted with no bag limit, James Shults requested a Discharge Permit to use a 30-year old Daisy BB gun to run the pest from his residence and from neighbors’ areas with their permission. After inspection of Shults' neighborhood by two police sergeants the Chief (whom Shults likes personally) refused the permit because the [...]

When Hogs Get Your Deer…

2020-06-10T09:23:33-04:00July 15th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Predator Hunting|1 Comment

There are an estimated 2-3 million feral hogs in Texas, and those numbers might triple in the next five years. The hogs are causing all sorts of damage. As we have documented here, they get some fawns every year. I had not heard that pigs can find and destroy a deer you shot, like a coyote might, until now. Blogger Wren sent this: “We have hog problems on both ranches I hunt, in the Edwards Plateau area and in Webb County down in South Texas. I have not personally seen hogs feasting on fawns, but I can attest to what hogs can do to downed deer. Very much like the damage coyotes can inflict. My oldest son Todd shot a [...]
