Got this email recently from Jeff: My son was introduced to bowhunting by my brother, and last year he went out and shot a big 8 pointer. I was reading your article in Bowhunting World magazine about a hunter named Shane Good getting 3 big deer from the same stand. Well, my son will not be moving from his stand anytime soon! The point I was making in that article is that some tree stands are in the perfect spot and produce a good buck year after year after year. Not all stands mind you but some. Here’s the gist of it from that story: “One October afternoon several years ago, Ontario bowhunter Shane Good shot the buck of his dreams: [...]
Let me introduce you to my new hunting buddy, 15-year-old Jordan Beri. Last Friday evening Jordan, who has spina bifida and is paralyzed from the chest down, shot this 212-pound, low-fence giant in SC. Jordan dropped the fully mature deer w/one shot. I have never been so proud. I was at least 10 times more excited than he was! Before our afternoon hunt, we held hands and Jordan led us in a little prayer. He’s been a preacher since age 4 and has traveled around the South preaching at revivals. His dad, Patrick, told me that often at these events other preachers come up to Jordan and say, “Boy, let’s pray that one day you’ll walk again.” To which Jordan replies, “You [...]
I don’t have any details on either of these monsters, just what I have seen on Facebook or Twitter. Top photo is a 200-inch full-velvet bow giant from Kentucky. Bottom buck is reportedly from Kansas; I have seen some snide comments on social media that the second deer might be a pen deer, but who knows, anytime somebody kills a really big buck jealous people say that. I do hope it’s wild and legit. Anyhow, the sight of these racks ought to get ya that much more fired up!
Dr. Grant Woods, one of the top deer biologists in the world, told me one time: “Whitetail bucks react incredibly quickly to either a positive or a negative stimulus. A lot of hunters fail to take that into account quickly enough. For example, if a buck sees or hears you in a tree stand near a food plot, he will learn to avoid that spot very fast. He will still go to the plot (positive stimulus) but he will circle your stand (negative stimulus) so that you might never know he was there. You might sit there all afternoon, not see any deer and wonder what is wrong. Hunters need to take into consideration how fast mature bucks react and adjust [...]
