Review: Cabela’s Axis Hunting Boot

I have long been a fan of Cabela’s hunting boots, for the money they are hard to beat. I wore the 8-inch Axis boot last deer season, for some 60-plus days, and it might be the best one yet. Comfortable the first time I put them on, no break-in time needed. Lightweight enough (2.7 pounds pair) and substantial soles that permit smooth and sure-footed stalking, and great ankle support. This is a great boot for both deer and elk hunting. The boot uppers are built of nubuck leather with 600-denier nylon. They feature waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX moisture-wicking linings to keep your feet dry and comfortable, and 400 grams Thinsulate insulation. I have found that 400 grams insulation is about perfect [...]

Trijicon Huron Riflescope For The Deer Hunter

2021-01-29T11:46:49-05:00January 28th, 2020|Big Deer TV, Deer Hunting, Gear Reviews|Comments Off on Trijicon Huron Riflescope For The Deer Hunter

Trijicon, the official riflescope partner of BIG DEER TV, introduces the Huron scope specifically designed for the North American deer hunter. This is a world-class optic, top-quality glass and a rugged aluminum construction. Like all Trijicon optics used by the U.S. military and law enforcement, the Huron hunting scope undergoes extensive testing: temperature shock tests from -20 degrees F to 140 degrees F; every model is subjected to 5,000 consecutive rounds to confirm no reticle shift; and immersion tested, every riflescope is dry-nitrogen filled to eliminate internal fogging. Whether you hunt thick eastern brush or more open fields and plains in the Midwest or West, there is a variable-power scope option for you: 3-9 by 40mm, 3-12x40mm and 2.5-10 by [...]

Today’s fine guest post is from Big Daddy, who has been with me on the Big Deer Blog since I started it 11 years ago. Thanks for the support, BD! I began hunting in 1967 at age 12 and took my first bow-killed deer,a doe, that year. In those early years I was just trying to kill any deer. The years passed and most found me with a filled tag, some with bow others with gun. In 1976 I killed my first P&Y buck and it changed my hunting career forever. During the past 42 years I have taken 43 bucks with a bow, all but one in Pennsylvania. One was in New Jersey. I purchased property in north-central PA [...]

Michigan: Poacher Gets 5 Years In Prison For Killing Hunter

2020-06-10T09:14:51-04:00January 22nd, 2020|BigDeer|2 Comments

From Deer & Deer Hunting: A convicted felon will serve just five years in prison for trespassing and killing a hunter who was in the process of field-dressing a buck he shot on opening day of Michigan’s 2018 deer season. According to the Michigan DNR, Justin Beutel, 38, was hunting on family land… He had just shot a buck, recovered it, and then sent photos of the deer to family and friends. After taking a photo of himself with the deer, Beutel started field-dressing the buck. He was then was shot and killed by David Michael Barber. According to court records, Barber said he did not see Beutel (who was wearing an orange hat) and thought he was shooting at [...]

Hunting Management Bucks in Texas

There are 2 reasons to visit South Texas in January: the weather is wonderful, and there are plenty of big deer running around. On most ranches in Texas, those bucks are classified as either “trophy” or “management” deer. Trophies are bucks with 10 points or better that have the potential to grow 150-class racks and larger, up to 170-plus. The larger the racks, the more expensive they are to hunt. Texas ranchers and deer managers consider management bucks to be: 1) 4-year-old and older deer with limited antler potential; and 2) bucks with 9 points or less that gross score less than 140 inches. These are the type of bucks that I can afford to hunt (cost of a management [...]
