When a deer is quartering away from you, aim for the heart/lung vitals behind the shoulder you can see, then slide the scope’s crosshair back, pin it on the ribs and press the trigger. The harder a buck is quartering away, the farther back you aim on the ribcage—6 inches to 8 inches to even a foot. The physics is for the bullet to punch through the deer’s ribs, angle forward through the lungs/heart and either lodge in the opposite side front shoulder or exit it. Think out a shot before it happens. Say you’re stalking on a ridge: What if a buck jumps out of that draw? Which way will he run? Is it 150 or 200 yards across [...]

Wild Hog Hunting At Georgia’s Gopher Plantation

2021-04-01T10:02:01-04:00April 1st, 2021|Big Deer TV, CZ-USA, sportsman channel|Comments Off on Wild Hog Hunting At Georgia’s Gopher Plantation

There are some 9 to 10 million wild hogs in America, tens of thousands of them rooting across all 159 counties in Georgia, including down in Ware County where the Gopher Plantation is located. An invasive species, feral swine cause significant damage to crops and natural resources. The economic impact of hog destruction in Georgia alone is estimated at more than $150 million. Feral swine are incredibly prolific. Sows have 1 to 2 litters of 4 to 6 piglets per year. Once little hogs reach 10 to 15 pounds, natural predation is not a factor. Hunting and trapping afford a modicum of control, but once a population of wild hogs is firmly rooted in an area, like it is at the [...]

Make triply sure the gun is unloaded. Visually and physically inspect the gun to be sure there isn’t a shell in either the magazine or the chamber. Rack a pump or semi-auto several times, or break open an over/under, several times just to be sure. Secure the gun in a gun vise and spray a little Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber around the action and down the barrel. Fit your cleaning rod with a gauge-appropriate brass brush and work it up and down the barrel. Take care not to drag the cleaning rod along the muzzle. Dowse a patch with gun solvent or bore cleaner and scrub the bore. Repeat as necessary. Run a dry patch down the barrel. Check for [...]

Czech firearms company Ceska Zbrojovka has signed a deal to acquire Colt, the American gun maker.... The deal is worth $220 million…and is subject to approval by regulators. The Czech company said it expected the transaction to be completed in the second quarter of 2021. “With this strategic move, CZG will acquire significant production capacity in the United States and Canada and substantially expand its global customer base,” the Czech company said. As a side note, CZ-USA is the new firearms sponsor of BIG DEER TV for 2021 and I am excited about it. My first year of hunting deer with CZ rifles, which are renowned for dependability and top accuracy at a price deer hunters can afford, was wildly successful. [...]

3 Shooting Tips To Kill More Deer With One Bullet

1. Most of us go to the range a month before deer season, fire a few shots off the bench to confirm our rifle’s zero and call it good. But you need more training than that for consistent one-shot kills. Best way to practice is with a scoped rimfire rifle that approximates the heft and feel of your deer rifle. Grab a brick of .22 LR ammo if you can find it, and set targets 50 yards away in a safe area. Once or twice a month, fire dozens of rounds from the sitting, standing, kneeling and prone positions. With the .22 there’s no recoil, so practice as much as you want. It's fun, and you’ll be amazed how much [...]
