In the last 2 years I have shot over the spine of 2 bucks by dropping my bow and pulling out of the shot too soon. Since I started flinging arrows at hay bales with a recurve too long ago to remember, I have been fighting this glitch. You might struggle with it too. When you release and try to watch your arrow hit a deer, you unwittingly drop your bow arm and lift your head a few inches. Sometimes your rig is so fast and forgiving that you can get away with it. Other times you shoot just over a deer. Quick Fix: Pick a spot on a deer, draw, release the arrow and don’t move a muscle until [...]

NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, released its 2022 Congressional Report Card, grading all 430 sitting U.S. Representatives and 100 U.S. Senators on key legislation that is of critical importance to the firearm industry, Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and America’s hunters and target shooters. “This scorecard is of vital importance to voters as we head into November elections. This tells voters exactly where their lawmakers stand on issues they care about like recreational shooting and hunting and the right to keep and bear arms,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “This nonpartisan scorecard reflects the voting record of each legislator. A major survey shows that most hunters in Pennsylvania liked the new and controversial Saturday-after-Thanksgiving start to the firearms deer season. For many years, the Penn. gun season started the Monday after Thanksgiving, but that was changed to the Saturday opener in 2021. Two-thirds of the hunters surveyed preferred the Saturday opening day. Top reasons cited included more opportunity to hunt since most people are off work that day, and kids are out of school and its easier for them to go with a parent on Saturday. 27 percent of hunters surveyed by Responsive Management on behalf of the Pennsylvania Game Commission said they oppose a Saturday opener. Most of those hunters are old-school and hunt from mountain camps. Deer [...]

Iowa hunters can use semi-automatic weapons, including AR-15 rifles in .223, to kill does in more parts of the state during a newly created antlerless season in January, under a bill signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds. Use of semi-auto rifles could expand to as many as 15 counties in an effort to control growing deer herds. Advocates of the late rifle season say this will help reduce car collisions, and help farmers who complain that deer are damaging crops. It will be interesting to see what Iowa hunters think about this.

With all the crime and tragedy swirling in America right now--what causes young males do such violent and unspeakable things?--the results of this 2019 study are interesting and relevant.—M.H. Paul Niekamp, a Ball State economics professor, analyzed daily crime data with statistics from deer hunting seasons spanning 20 years and 21 states for his study, “Good Bang for the Buck: Effects of Rural Gun Use on Crime.” “The results of this paper provide strong evidence that enormous increases in recreational long gun prevalence are not associated with any increase in violent crime,” he said. “In the least populous areas, where long gun prevalence increased 530%, estimates suggest that male violent crime actually decreased.” Niekamp’s study provides the first estimates of [...]
