The sleek design of the Case® Winkler Skinner is the result of a long career in knife making by Master Bladesmith Daniel Winkler and the experiences of retired U.S. Army Special Operator and Navy SEAL Kevin “Skinner” Holland. This handcrafted knife is the first in a series of collaborations that celebrate American Heroes, an idea brought to life by Case’s historic military contributions and Winkler Knives’ ongoing involvement with U.S. Special Operations. This fixed-blade knife is lightweight (6.7 ounces), well-balanced and impressively sturdy. The sculpted, multi-camo handle with finger grooves fit my hand perfectly as I gutted, skinned and caped an Alabama buck. The flat ground, distal tapered trailing point blade (5.2 inches) is made from 80CrV2 steel, known for [...]

Review: Gobi Heated Socks For Hunters

2022-01-30T09:33:22-05:00January 31st, 2022|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Gear Reviews|Comments Off on Review: Gobi Heated Socks For Hunters

I hunt in northern Saskatchewan every year, where the primary technique is to sit in a brush blind out in the elements from dawn to dusk, hoping a giant buck strolls by. Sitting still for 9 hours in temps that range from the single digits to high 20s, like I did for a week in November, was the perfect field-test for Gobi Tread Heated Socks. If you’ve hunted from a tree stand or blind very much in cold climates, I don’t have to tell you about cold feet, one of the true banes of deer hunting. The mediumweight, calf-high cotton socks are infused with steel fiber heating technology that focuses warmth in heat zones beneath your toes, where you need [...]

In 2022, CZ-USA introduces 4 models in the new 600 series of bolt-action rifles: Lux, Range, Trail and Alpha. I recently got my hands on an Alpha, which has several unique and innovative features that you have never seen on a deer rifle before. I like what I saw and, I believe, you will too. Take your pick, the Alpha is chambered for .223, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .30-06. and 300 Win. Mag. The rifle has a lightweight aluminum receiver with an integral 2-piece Picatinny rail for easy and efficient scope mounting. The receiver perfectly balances a semi-heavy, cold hammer-forged barrel, which comes threaded and suppressor-ready (told you this rifle had innovations). Receiver and barrel are housed in a [...]

How To Choose A Deer Hunting Knife

Wood or stag knife handles are pretty, but handles of Kraton or a similar high-tech rubber are better for fieldwork on game. You can grip a rubber handle securely and tightly, even in wet or bloody conditions. This ensures better cuts on an animal, and there’s less chance a blade will slip and slice your finger. For all-around field care, a stainless-steel blade with a slight drop-point design is excellent. Whether you prefer a fixed-blade or folder, try one with a “gut hook” (picture) which works great for field-dressing a deer. Most people buy knives online these days, but for serious deer hunting I recommend you go to Cabela’s or Bass Pro and hand-test several blades before you buy. Some [...]

New Jersey Bans Deer Urine, Hunters Must Use Synthetic Scent

Beginning with the 2021 hunting season, it is no longer legal to possess, sell or use scents derived from the urine or glandular secretions of live deer in New Jersey. According to the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife the ban is intended to help safeguard the health of the state’s deer herd from the threat of Chronic Wasting Disease. The thinking is that using natural deer products in the woods could increase interaction between animals and possibly increase the spread of the disease. It should be noted that reputable scientists and lead authors of commonly referenced studies on urine and CWD agree that “the risk of urine-based scents spreading CWD is virtually zero”.
