Got the following from my health care provider MDVIP. Good info to keep you healthy, safe and hunting throughout the season: COVID-19 restrictions such as social distancing, frequent handwashing, less travel and masking probably muted last year’s flu season, which researchers feared could be bad due to the pandemic. But flu diagnoses and hospitalizations were the lowest in 15 years. Ironically, those lower numbers could foretell a bad flu season for 2021-2022. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that reduced population immunity from last year’s light season could cause an early and severe flu season this year. In recent years, I’ve spent a little extra money to upgrade all my hunting gear, and I hunt better and safer for it. The housing of the Fenix HM65R headlamp I now use for deer hunting is built of a serious quality, black magnesium alloy. It’s strong, lightweight, and even waterproof to 2m. The 2 lights—a large spot with clear lens and a smaller flood with diffuser lens—have individual on/off buttons, and can be used independently, which is practical in most hunting situations. With an easy press of a button, you can engage 4 output levels on the spotlight; at the highest output, it’s a published 1000 lumens of light, which in layman’s term is very, very bright. Three flood [...]

The Helena Independent Record posted thoughts from Montana game wardens that will keep hunters safe, legal and happy as seasons approach. Good advice wherever you hunt: Have a plan. Know where you're going — specifically (property boundaries)— and all applicable hunting regulations. Whether a violation is intentional or unintentional, it's still a violation. Inadvertent violations usually stem from a lack of preparedness. Let somebody know your plan— particularly where you'll be and when you expect to return (for your safety). Make sure you have legal access. If you're hunting on private land, make sure you have up-to-date permission. Hunting without landowner permission is the ticket wardens write more frequently than any other. Don't dump carcasses illegally. There are three [...]

I have blogged and said on TV many times that the big buck you’ve been scouting and watching right now in late summer might still be in the same area when hunting season opens, or he might be a mile or more away if he shifts between a summer/fall and winter range. This graphic and Instagram post from the experts at the Mississippi State Deer Lab sum it up well: "About 1/3 of adult bucks in one of our recent studies have seasonal home range segments, like buck 20 pictured here. He spent late summer and fall in the eastern portion of his range. For two consecutive years, he packed up shop around November 1 and moved to the western [...]

How To Bowhunt Deer From A Ground Blind

Pop-up camouflage blinds work great to hide you, and especially to cover your moves as you draw your bow. But more times than not, no matter how well you hide the tent and brush it in with sticks and vegetation, deer will see it and shy from it. This is especially true if you try to pop up a blind a week or 2 before you plan to hunt a spot. Does seem to be more blind-shy than bucks. But when an old doe sees you blind, smells a rat, and starts stamping and blowing before flagging off, any bucks nearby become wired and alerted to something in the area just ain’t right. They’ll vacate the area or at least [...]
