Back in September of 2020, as we were all locked down and trying to figure out what the hell the world was coming to, I blogged that with the border closed and no Americans going to Canada and spending $5,000-plus apiece to hunt for a big deer (closer to 8 Grand once you figure in airfare, incidentals, taxidermy, etc.) there would be a lot of pain in the outfitting business. But for the Canadian guides who could hang on and stay in business, this would lead to some spectacular opportunities in 2021, 2022 and beyond. With virtually no pressure in 2020, the bucks were able to mature and grow another year, creating better age structure and thousands of bigger deer [...]

BREAKING: Minnesota Researchers Develop New Field Test For CWD

University of Minnesota researchers have discovered the first-ever way to field test deer for CWD, a potential game changer in the ongoing fight against the deer disease. The new test is cheaper than lab examinations currently in use to check for CWD, and more importantly, it uses field-deployable equipment to test tissue samples from deer and provide preliminary positive or negative results in 24 hours. Imagine this: Shoot a deer, drive to a test site and drop off a tissue sample. The same day or the next day you get a text saying if your deer tested positive (discard it) or negative (eat the meat) for CWD. I wrote about this exciting new development in-depth over at the Realtree website, [...]

How Long Should You Wait To Get Your Buck Back From The Taxidermist?

Have you gotten your 2020 shoulder mount back yet? I doubt it. Recently I took a social media poll of fervent deer hunters and asked them how long on average it takes to get a buck back from their taxidermist. I got hundreds of great responses, split down the middle: 49% of people said 8 or 9 months, and 51% said 10 months to a year. There were some outliers. A few people said they got their mounts back 2 to 4 months after they killed those deer. Those were early bow kills. You sooner in the season you take your buck to the taxidermist, before he gets crazy busy, the quicker you’ll get him back. If you kill a [...]

Why Do Some Bucks Shed Antlers Late In Spring?

Hey Mike: It was an easy winter on whitetails this year in NE North Dakota. We had very little snow and only about 1 week with really cold temperatures. The deer should be in good health. I got this picture of a buck still holding his antlers on April 10th! Does that seem abnormally late? What is the latest you have heard of whitetails dropping their sheds this far north? I figured it was possible considering the mild winter. Other ideas that crossed my mind were, is this an antlered doe? But usually, antlered does remain in velvet. Or maybe this was a buck who got injured or otherwise had low testosterone?--Derek Plautz Derek, thanks for checking in. I believe [...]
