A Mississippi hunter shot this black, or melanistic, buck. It’s unclear when he killed it, but best I can determine he shot the rarest color phase of whitetail around last Christmas. Story goes the 98-years-young hunter drilled the buck through the heart at 125 yards. I have posted several melanistic bucks on the blog over the years, but this one is truly magnificent—solid black with white highlights! Nice rack with heavy bases, the unique buck eluded hunters and survived for 4 years. Black, or melanistic, deer are even less common, the rarest of the rare.  The first one recognized by a scientist was in 1929. Of the tens of millions of whitetails that have been shot by hunters in the [...]

Zach and Ellie Atkins are our favorite hunting couple. Zach reported in with this great news: Well Mike, yesterday afternoon I got it done. 27 days it took and I finally got it done. Best early birthday present ever! This buck was my #1 hit lister. We named him “Scar” because he doesn’t have a right eye, the whole eye is missing. I got in the stand around 12:00 and this bad boy was out in the field dogging a doe about 100 yards away. He started working my way so I got everything ready to go. Then all of a sudden he started to turn the doe away from me. I thought, “Oh hell no!" Grabbed my bow, climbed [...]

From GameandFishmag.com: Last season Georgia hunter Benny Overholt passed a good non-typical buck in velvet that he estimated to be five years old. Fast forward to 2021 when the same buck started showing up on trail cameras, and Overholt noticed there was something decidedly weird about it. He determined that the deer never shed its rack after last season, and remained in velvet the entire time. As a 6 ½-year-old, the buck was essentially sporting a double rack, and still completely in velvet. Overholt knew, if given the opportunity this season, he wouldn't be passing the shot again. Benny shot the massive cryptorchid buck on September 13 and noticed the deer’s testicles had shriveled up, solving the mystery of the [...]

I met Saskatchewan farmer Oneil Baillargeon on a hunt up North several years ago, and immediately knew the guy was a great hunter. It runs in the family. Oneil and his wife, Taylor, watched this tremendous buck for years and hunted his sheds every spring near their farm. A few days ago their history with the animal came to an end. "Sad but good," said Oneil. The buck walked by Taylor's blind at 25 yards and she smoked him with a muzzleloader. The 7.5-year-old whitetail had a thick rack with 13 scorable points. The rack was going downhill, but it still scored 168. BTW, this girl is a killer of big deer. Check out Taylor's 2020 buck pictured below.
