I’ve frozen my fanny off way too many days in a tree stand in December.  Nowadays when I’m desperately trying to fill my last tag I sit on the ground. It’s warmer down there, and if you set up right, you also have better hiding cover. The keys are to keep your blind small and tight, and to build it in just the right spot downwind of where you expect to see deer. Location: You can plop down anywhere and shoot a buck at 150 yards or farther with a .270. But when you’re using a slug-gun or a muzzleloader and hoping for an ideal shot of 100 yards and in, where you sit becomes more important. If you’re bowhunting, [...]

I recently wrote a piece for Realtree.com on the potential health risks of dragging out a dead deer, especially for us older guys.  Emergency room physicians note that minor to serious injuries occur each season as lucky hunters drag out their deer... Unfortunately, that has become true once again as three older hunters (ages 57, 65 and 83) in Michigan recently died doing what they love. Two of the men suffered heart attacks as they dragged out dead deer, which is the top risks older hunters face. Cardiologist Dr. Bradley Serwer told foxnews.com that the risks associated with deer hunting include cold exposure, adrenaline surges and physical exertion. He went on to offer 5 tips to stay safe in the [...]

Arkansas’ “Velvet Buck” Season Big Success

Arkansas bowhunters harvested 1,231 deer during the state’s first statewide early buck hunt earlier this month. The jump-start to deer season was added during the biannual regulations-setting process this spring to offer hunters the opportunity to pursue a buck still “in velvet.” Ralph Meeker, deer program coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said the hunt’s harvest was within the range expected by biologists. “When we look at historical harvest for the first three days of archery season, hunters typically check between 2,000 and 4,000 deer, depending on the weather,” Meeker said. “But a lot of those deer are does, so when you look at only the buck component of that harvest, it’s around 800 to 1,500 antlered deer.” Meeker [...]

Since July 1, 2023, the PA Game Commission has collected nearly 11,000 CWD samples from deer. Hunter harvested samples from last season made up the bulk of those with over 7,000. CWD was detected in a total of 291 of those hunter-harvested deer. To date, over 440 deer have tested positive for CWD in the 2023-2024 sampling year, up from 426 CWD-positive samples in 2022-23. “CWD surveillance is crucial to managing the disease,” said agency CWD Section Supervisor Andrea Korman. “CWD is a serious threat to deer and elk. Knowing where the disease is allows us to focus our efforts to keep more deer from becoming infected.” One of those efforts is using CWD Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) units [...]
