Hunting season is over, and now is the time to give your rifle a thorough cleaning. Gun-Cleaning Gear To do the job right, you need to secure your rifle horizontally in a vise. A vise attached to a workbench at your house will work fine. Or you can purchase a portable gun vise from company that specializes in firearms-cleaning accessories. Spend $40 or more for a universal gun-cleaning kit, which will include a three-piece bore rod and an assortment of jags, brushes, patches and other accessories for cleaning not only your bolt-action, but also other handguns and long guns that you own. Also, and this is important, purchase a bore guide, which will protect the bore and action of your [...]

You’ve waited all year for this, the rut baby! No matter which week in November you take off work, your Number One strategy is simple: Spend every minute you can in your best stands because you never know when a good buck will prowl by, or come a running hot on the heels of a doe. Here are 29 more tips to help you punch your tag. #2 In addition to big rubs, look for clusters of antler-mangled saplings or cedar branches. The 2023 archery opener started with very warm and humid weather in most states, but after that first week, the bowhunting has been golden. The best early October archery season I have seen in years. Why? A wave of cold fronts has swept across the country the last couple of weeks, dropping temperatures from 70- and 80-degree highs to the 40s (early mornings) and with clear, high-pressure afternoons in the upper 50s and 60s. That trend is expected to continue for at least the next week. Deer are moving, bucks are rubbing madly and scrape-making early. Bowhunters from Iowa to Ohio to Virginia are capitalizing on the cooler weather and shooting some massive whitetail bucks (like the hog Andrew Schram [...]

This tweet by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (@OKWildlifeDept) has gone viral: This "tree stand" was discovered on public land in McIntosh Co. by Warden Rowland. Not only is this EXTREMELY NOT SAFE, it is EXTREMELY NOT LEGAL. Not Safe: The chair was attached to the tree by just 4 small screws! Not legal: In Oklahoma (and many other states) it’s illegal to drive nails or screws into a live tree on public land. In a related tweet after posting the chair in the tree the ODWC said: We are hosting a hunter safety class specifically for adults. Please sign up, some of you really need it. LOL

Mike: I was just curious, where do you aim on a deer when you are hunting with a gun? I have had terrific success with the shoulder shot versus the standard behind-the-shoulder shot. The recovery rates and distances that deer run, margin of error and terminal performance are all superior when I use this aiming point. I think others could benefit if they changed where they shoot a buck and go for more shoulder. Thanks, Kenny from VA. Kenny: I have shot a bunch of bucks through the shoulders and agree that it is a tremendous shot. When you’re on target, you not only take out both shoulders but also get the front of the lungs and shock the heart. [...]
